This wine was not ready yet, and I greatly regret opening it. But I guess there's only one way to find out. I wish I had bought two. I dare say this is what they call the dumb phase during the aging process.

As a newbie, I have always been told by those that know more than me that in truth, aging by an extra year or two would be imperceptible or at best have a marginal impact. Not the case?

or perhaps it was just subpar to begin with? how do you distinguish between not ready yet and never going to be ready?

nine years is a decent amount of age. if the wine wasn’t great with nine years of age, odds are that more age wouldn’t significantly improve the wine.
