For real though… Always see posts here about balance and time off and stuff.

Best thing I started doing was talking about my work performance being closely related to my personal time to recharge during the first interview. I don't dwell on it or drag on, but I touch on things like consistent schedule, the occasional weekend off, and asking about protocol for requesting time off.

Some have acted dodgy and others have flat out said that won't happen. Either way, saves you a lot of headaches down the line.

We work / live in an industry with such insane hours that time off and the protocol to get it needs to be a factor in why we take a job or not. Not only we have long hours, but those hours are always when people not in the industry usually meet up, events happen and so on. This means exceptions from the schedule are to be expected.

Time off is as important as time on the clock.

Far too often I’ve heard people in this industry complain about lack of a life outside work when I know for a fact that that they spend most of their time outside work drunk and / or high. This is not an indictment of drinking and drugging, necessarily. But I feel like a lot of people don’t recognize that what they’re lacking isn’t quantity of life outside work, but quality.

If you want to feel good about your work / life balance, you need to feel good about your work and feel good about your life outside work. If you hate your job or spend your free time fucked up without actually pursuing any of the things you want from life, then no quantity on either side of the balance is going to feel good.
