Ugh I’m literally making birria tacos in the crockpot right now and started putting the meat and mixture in around 1:30, I just checked around 4:30 and realized this was on the bottom of the crockpot and realized I didn’t take it out 😭 It still needs to cook for another 2-3 hours but I took it out instantly when I saw it and now I’m mid crying having a moment if I need to discard or if it’s safe to eat. It’s not ripped or melted either. Has anyone made this mistake or is it safe?

Is it just the “diaper” from the meat? If so, it should be fine, I’d just cook it a little longer (the diaper absorbs moisture and blood from the meat, so if it was on there that portion of the roast would likely need a little extra time). Just make sure nothing is burned or melted to the bottom.

I’d keep chugging along like nothing happened, but that’s just me.

I have accidentally cooked the food in with the diaper a time or two. I clue if it’s safe, but I’ve always thrown it out.

Accidentally cooking the absorbent meat pad in your stew can be concerning. Here’s a safety assessment:

    *Risks:*

    1. Chemical contamination: Meat pads may contain chemicals like superabsorbent polymers, sodium polyacrylate, or cellulose. These can potentially leach into your stew.
    2. Bacterial growth: The pad can introduce bacteria into your stew, especially if it’s not designed for cooking.

    *Guidelines:*

    1. Check the pad’s packaging: If it explicitly states “food-grade” or “cook-safe,” you might be okay.
    2. Inspect the stew: Look for any visible signs of contamination, such as:
    – Unusual color or texture
    – Off smell
    – Pad disintegration
    3. Err on caution: If unsure, discard the stew to prioritize food safety.

    *Precautions:*

    1. Do not consume the stew if:
    – The pad has broken apart or disintegrated.
    – You notice any unusual taste, smell, or texture.
    2. Take precautions if you decide to eat the stew:
    – Reheat to 165°F (74°C) to kill potential bacteria.
    – Consume immediately; do not store or refrigerate.

  5. I would rather eat my own toe nails than that. Sorry. I would be deeply disturbed if that plastic diaper was cooked with my meat. No way.

Okay guys thank you, I got a lot of people around me who are also strange about plastic too. This helped me with the intrusive impulse I was having to eat it. Bf is buying me birria and pupusas from a local place, I’m healed 🥰
