Tried to make potato waffles but was confronted with my own incompetence
Next time maybe I'll mash them a bit?

A rustic mashed/smashed potato would be baller in a waffle maker.

If I was testing this I would boil them until barely holding their shape, stir them so that their starch begins to bind them together but they still have chunks, and stir in one egg to hopefully bind them. Fry like batter on waffle maker. And douse whatever result in butter.

I like to mix frozen hash browns and shredded cheddar cheese about a 50/50 mix. A drizzle of olive oil, a little salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and then waffle them

Without looking up a recipe, I’d prob approach it like this next time;
– boil or bake potatoes until soft (i would bake to retain starch content but it takes longer)
– run the potatoes through a potato ricer or press through a fine sieve
– add a bit of flour/salt/pepper/maybe butter and mix it all together with the potato
– form a ball and place it in the center of the iron and press it down
