I just use heat and grill brush as it does not get any easier.

Burn it, scrape it, use it.

Mine is a few years old. Never seen anyone use a hose on grill grates honestly. Just burn it, scrape it and send it.

Edit: don’t use wire bristles. The risk of ingestion is scary AF. You can find a rough steel wool or just use a wad of foil. But don’t overdo that and create foil flakes.

Clean regularly and when I’m done cooking I like to half a lemon and rub the grates down while it’s hot. As mentioned above don’t use those wire brushes they are scary; I use the Weber scrubber it’s a plastic like material and works great with the Weber spray.

IMO, part of the enjoyment of grilling is burning off the remnants of the previous meal. Get to smell some of it again.

If you wanna get crazy you could use one of those grill stone blocks (Like a pummel stone for grills). I use Citrus Safe before each grilling and afterwards while the grill is still warm I use the BBQ Daddy. I highly recommend the BBQ Daddy if you want clean grates.

There are pumice stones for cleaning grills that work really well

I’m with the others. Burn it off, scrape it, and cook on it. What you’re trying to do is a wase of time unless you have OCD and need your grill to look like it never gets used.

I stopped after getting advice on here. I heat it, scrape it, heat it some more, scrape it, heat it again, then add the Mexican onion disinfected method and done lol….

I’ll just add that in addition to brushing or scraping while very hot, some additional OCD satisfaction can be had by taking a wet hand towel and rubbing it on the grates with your long tongs.

TIL people really worry about scrubbing their grate back to new each use. Our forefathers are rolling in their graves. Just cook on it mate.

I get the grill hot and wipe it down with a wet rag, water only. The steam created will blast the carbon and grease off the grill on one or two passes. Be Careful!!! The steam created will also go through the rag and can quickly scald your fingers.. wear good bbq gloves. You’ll be surprised at how well it works..

  12. You are scrubbing off the non stick coating. You don’t want to see clean ss

I just use that hand scrapper you have after the grate been hot a few minutes and that’s that. As the great Al Bundy once said, “ I never clean my grill! Ashes from the past, for burgers of the future” the man scored 4 touchdowns in one game. It’s gotta be solid advice

  14. ChugsMaJugs

Ya all clean it?! I just brush it a bit, start a fire and cook.

A wire brush, but ive never deep cleaned my grills, it’s like washing a cast iron pan in a dishwasher

5% ammonia and dish soap strong mix, place in a large flat IKEA tray to hold grate, pour near boiling water over, let sit for 20 minutes and scrub with a steel wool pad, good as new 10 minutes later if you do it every couple of cooks.

I don’t get why people don’t clean theirs properly, maybe they cost nothing in the US, here, a new stainless steel GBS grate for the 22” will run you $150.

  17. CosmoKray

I clean mine only right before cooking. I’ve always thought cleaning after cooking removed oils that would preserve the grate some.

  18. BabyGorilla1911

Hell, I barely ever clean the grates. When I do I use a paint scraper. I clean the bowl more often.

  19. aggravati0n

Ill use a non metallic pot scourer, and if I’m extra lazy might spray 1st with oven cleaner then hose off

I had my first Weber kettle grill for ~15 years and never cleaned it. It was awesome. Don’t overthink it. It’s not like a gas grill that has flare ups.

  21. garciawork

I have a scraper call ed char gone I think, and it is awesome. But, it would be a nightmare on the gourmet system grates.
