First off. I’m 39 so birth year is 1985 (woot woot)
Anyways I got an email from a friend who’s a wine columnist who had an elderly column reader write into him and ask if he knew anyone who might be interested.
It’s a 1985 Mondavi cab in 6L format. It’s been stored in a cold room all its life since late 80s when purchased at a wine merchant shop in Windsor Ontario.
Long story short, after some back and forth emails with the seller, they are looking for 1350$ CDN for the bottle.
Thoughts?
I have several other 1985 friends who I’d be going splits on this with and enjoy it for a 40th birthday celebration.
The seller is 73 years old so pardon the blurry pic; I’ve since requested better ones.

I mean the larger the bottle the slower it ages…
Parker once said that if you buy a bottle on the day your child is born it will be ready on their 18th birthday.
I think it is likely a good bottle you are talking about ~ 170$ a bottle price for 8 bottles worth.
Since I am spending your money I say go for it, I can come help you drink it if that helps….
Also a 1985 here, and have purchased (and drank) several of the 1985 Mondavi cabs in 750ml format. All were past prime, one was vinegar, others were in varying degrees of “dead” to “fine”. All purchased at auction from K&L. Maybe the larger format will have a significantly (helpful) impact to slow down the aging. I bought for the novelty and pretty much got only that out of it, so just a warning, I wouldnt expect a mind blowing experience. Have 2 still in the cellar and will save for 40 next year, but again, not expecting more than novelty factor.
I once had a 1984 mondavi and it was stunning. So much fruit still. That was like 8 years ago
I’ve had lots of luck with older Mondavi bottles from this era (pre-1991), including non-reserve. In a 6L format that was stored properly this should be fantastic. The price is fair so I say go for it!
Worth a shot if you have the money to burn. I’d have some other options ready for the party though, and I’d try to pour and drink it pretty quickly.
We had a jewel of a 1979 mondavi cab reserve which was impeccable. Had an 88 which was just meh.
For whatever it’s worth, I got a 750ml 1986 a year ago for $69.
Mondavi cab before the mid 90’s were awesome! Cook up the prime rib and share with your buds.
