I opened some carrots last night for dinner and the jar cracked off along with the lid. I’ve been careful not to use broken jars to begin with but is it possible the lid was just SO sealed that the glass cracked when I popped it off? Or is it more likely this jar was cracked and I simply missed it?
I’m mostly just upset this happened to a wide mouth and not one of my ugly regular jars 😞

Jar was cracked already or cracked during processing, no doubt about it.
There was probably a fault in the glass that was weakened further during processing. No way a lid fastens tight enough to break glass, or we wouldn’t be able to pop lids off with a spoon.
It also depends on how you pry open the lid. I have seen folks go at it aggressively with a knife!
I like to reuse some of my lids for dry storage so I found a gentler way to take off the lids. I put the flat part of a butter knife on the top edge of the lid and pry it open with the rounded end of a churchkey opener.
The only time this has happened to me, is when I used the bottle opener part of my can opener. I suspect that is what has caused this chip. It’s exactly the same shape as the chips I was getting with the can opener, in the same place.
When opening jars, I use a spoon and put it concave side down between the top thread and the lid, then give it a twist — it pops right open
I have a 3d printed opener designed for home canned jars with a magnet in it to keep the lid from flying away that works beautifully. I got it on Etsy. Being plastic it is soft enough that I’m not worried about scratching the glass.
