Yes, I know, I need to moisturize my hands. I’ve been doing a lot of yard work.

Pours a gorgeous pale gold with polished brass highlights. Honestly, the pictures don’t do it justice.

The aroma floats out of the glass; hazelnut, porcini mushroom, kefir, pound cake, lard. Deep, oily, and rich.

On the palate, this has bracing acidity, with candied lemon peel and powdery Smarties candies leading the way, followed by marzipan and rich clotted cream in the mid-palate. The finish dries out the cheeks and tongue; the candied lemon returns and evolves into pith.

The mouthfeel is mildly pétillant, with a few small bubbles still making themselves known. The wine itself is full and viscous; the texture, along with the contrast between the nose and the taste, is a total trip.

For me, this wine was slightly over the hill, with the acid overwhelming the balance (if not slight sweetness) that this house is generally known for. But that is to be expected with a 30 year old bottle, after all.

If you’ve still got some in your cellar, I suggest you drink up! For me, I’ll be looking towards younger vintages going forward.
