If you plant slightly germinated pea seeds, you reduce the risk of peas sitting in cold soil and rotting. This can be done as soon a your soil can be worked.

I do this with mine as a marker of sorts for when it's time to start stuff indoors. When the pea plants emerge and start needing to be trellised, I get out the germination mats and my little seed trays and start my early Spring stuff.
Great tip thank you, I love those garden fresh peas:-). I will remember this when our ground starts to thaw. Last year, I got too zealous. Stated tomatoes indoors, they got three feet high. When I thought there was no threat of frost, I planted. A few days later, the frost came:-(. I was totally bummed out because I lost 80 plants. I'm now more cautious.
Gary, what pea varieties do you favor for Zone 7? Thank you for the easy tip … I sprout chickpeas all the time, so this will be familiar territory!
Great tip. I will be planting snow peas next week, Golden Sweet, and Oregon Mammoth. Late summer, I will be planting a crop of Abe Lincoln peas for a fall harvest.
