When given some care, dandelions produce a large amount of greens early in the spring. You can eat dandelion leaves, flowers, and roots. Here is a mature garden dandelion plant and basics guidance for growing dandelions in your garden.

  1. Roasted dandelion root tea is delicious. Just be aware that the flower will still go to seed when it dries, so don't drop the flowers where you don't want the plants.

  2. Thanks for sharing! I love dandelions and also plant them in my garden. I drink roasted dandelion root tea daily and tell people about it every day. It is anti-cancer, anti inflammatory, a natural coffee substitute makes you feel alert and focused, a diuretic and cleanses liver and kidneys. Love it! And love planting and blowing the seeds around. I have saved a ton. I also purchased “French dandelion” seeds, a bigger variety. They are also drought tolerant and will grow almost anywhere. A nutrient dense superfood!!!

  3. Gary, do you sell these seeds at your seed shop? Also, will you be selling your book through your shop?

  4. I noticed you have copper in your bed, do you do electro-culture gardening. Seems to be the big rave right now.

  5. I wonder if the same tricks for making kale less bitter would work on the post flowered leaves? Like massaging to break down and release the bitterants, blanching to chemically alter the bitterants, and rinsing after cutting to wash away the bitterants once the cell walls are open. Might have to test it out.

  6. Dandelions are super nutritious. The benefits are too numerous to list here but many websites go into great detail with all the vitamins, minerals, and health-promoting properties, including help with diabetes, digestion, the liver, and lots more. What a blessing for free. Too bad they are usually ignored or destroyed.

  7. I probably have a couple hundred thousand in my 2 acres of lawn if anyone interested. 😃

  8. Sorry, but even if you can eat them, Dandelions are weeds. Let one go to seed and they multiply like crazy. Anyone that wants them for food can easily find them growing all over the place, mostly in yards. Growing them is a very very bad idea.

  9. Its not April 1st. LOL just dont put down weed and feed in the yard and pick whatever you want anytime. They grow like weeds because they are a weed.

  10. Hi Gary. Thank you for inspiring others to 'forge' for dandelion. Yes, the dandelion is a wonderful wild edible. Once the dandelion flowers I still eat the greens. I cook them like spinach adding to soups and such. I am also harvesting chickweed right now. I have daily tea using the root and leaf, adding ashwagandha, peppermint and sencha green tea. Yummy and healthy. Take care.

  11. I so agree with you! Ive had dandelion greens from the store! LOL
They are a little bitter/peppery tasting to me.
I wonder if smaller leaves are less bitter?

  12. Why don't you make Dandelion tincture? It is so good for your immune/lymphatic system and for your kidneys! You could do it with fresh dandelion. Just make sure you have three times as much as you would need if you were using dry. Actually, you'd also need to use the root.

  13. I’m happy to have dandelions and clover wherever they choose to grow on my property

  14. I got burned on Etsy. Ordered dandelions, or so I thought. Turns out it’s Cat’s Ear. Can use them the same way but they hurt. I use the roots for “coffee”. Lesson learned.

  15. I know people eat them but not me. Maybe I should put a sign in my yard FREE dandelions dig yourself.

  16. thank you for your education about danilions.Ive been subscribed to your channel for over years now. I love this channel. it is inspiring. I just bought some grow bags from your seed shop and I'm going to plant some dandelion in them instead of eating the ones from the store.

  17. Here in zone 5b the daffodils and dandelions are the first plants to flower after winter and the pollinators start showing up. My dandelions are organic as well ! 😂

  18. Congratulations on your new book! I'm looking forward to reading it. Dandilions are underrated, I believe the name comes from the serrated 'toothed' leaves like lions teeth. I lovingly cultivated one in a pot once which bewildered my husband 🤣.

  19. Dandelion jam is amazing, tastes like honey. I do not strain the flowers out and use green apples for the pectin.

  20. I also planted Italy dandelion. The leaf is much bigger with red stems. It is beautiful and more green leaves to eat🥰dandelion super expensive in Asia supermarket so I figured better growth ourselves ❤️

  21. Dandelions are real food and thrive even outside of a garden. I eat a lot of dandelions from my yard. The roots are great food, the crowns, the leaves, the buds way down in the center of the plant, and the flowers. I cook the roots like carrots, they are good. The leaves are biggest in the shade or tall grass. Try stripping out the center rib of the big leaves to get rid of a lot of the bitterness.

  22. I love dandelion greens or most any bitter green, really. I like to eat them with warm bacon and onion vinaigrette and boiled eggs or I saute them and toss them in scrambled eggs. They just go really well with eggs imo😂 and you couldn't find an easier plant to grow.

  23. They are great food! While I do not devote space to grow them, I happily forage them. Forageing is a perfekt addition to any garden.

  24. I've washed the roots, dried them out, cut them in small chunks, put in food processor then baked in the oven. I used like a coffee filler. Hard to believe but they taste like chocolate. I follow the Eattheweeds YouTube channel for eating wild edibles.
