Today is “Eat What You Want Day.”
So unless you’re medically restricted from something, give yourself a break from your regularly scheduled food groups.
This is what I wanted to eat today.
I’ve never been one to shy away from controversy. So let’s have at it!
Today’s breakfast: My take on Breakfast Spam Musubi with Egg.
Yes SPAM.
For some, a delicious guilty pleasure.
For others, no guilt whatsoever, just deliciousness.
For many, the sodium laden processed death food of Satan.
Wherever you stand on the spectrum, this canned meat product ain’t going anywhere and in Hawaii, this iteration is beloved.
A fusion of Japanese and Military food, Spam Musubi has become a beloved local dish sold everywhere on the islands. Musubi made from homemade Spam has even been served at formal events by celebrity chefs.
So if you’re horrified, or even mildly repulsed, before you hit send to let me know, remember:
One person’s YUK is another person’s YUM.
No real recipe. But here are some things I did.
Use short grain rice. I like Calrose, which is not a brand, it’s a variety.
I fried the spam until I liked the color, then “glazed” with a little hoisin sauce. But some folks use teriyaki sauce. Some just soy + sugar.
For the egg, I made a “tamagoyaki” type of omelet, which adds just 1/2 tsp sugar, 1/4 tsp salt to each beaten egg. Cook and cut into shape.
To get that perfect rice block, you can buy musubi molds, but you can also use the can to mold the rice (really pack it in) and then unmold and top with meat, egg, then a band of nori.
Happy “Eat What You Want Day” to all!
