This summer, I’ve been making a concerted effort to expand my palate into different types and styles of white wine. A long devotee of all things red, I’ve always been of the opinion that white wine just tastes like different shades of apple juice. Clearly not the most refined opinion, but c’est la vie.
At any rate, progress has been great! Only recently have I discovered the pleasures of Sancerre and Chablis (my god, Chablis); now I turn my attention to some of the whites coming out of the New World. Australia, in this case, and one of the most famed producers operating out of the area. Let’s see how this Semillon gets on.
All Semillon. 11% alcohol by volume.
On the nose, it’s quite floral. I’m not terribly well versed in the aromas of different flowers, so don’t ask me for anything precise here; suffice it to say, it’s quite floral. Also citrusy.
On the palate, it’s all lemon, lime, and grapefruit. This is a very citrusy gal, indeed. Good amount of fresh acidity rolling across the tip of the tongue and up the sides. Medium bodied with a relatively lengthy finish. Very slightly buttery note on the backend—some time in oak, perhaps? (I looked it up after and it’s not; all aging done in stainless steel. Don’t know what that buttery note is).
All in all, it’s great. It’s fresh, it’s vibrant, it’s really the kind of thing you want on a hot summer day. If you see it, this one is a pretty solid buy.

This one of my favorite wines in the world. Surprised you didn’t get any petrol notes.
