French Salad for Beginners
French Salad is a holiday staple, especially in Balkan. This wonderful appetizer is a meatless version of Russian salad. This shapeshifter easily transforms from an appetizer into a fancy side, or, with a slice of bread, into the main course.
How to serve French Salad?
It is usually served as a side dish, French salad is also a perfect spread. French salad is great with breaded chicken, Wiener Schnitzel, salami and “meza platters”, and fresh bread. There are even people, that enjoy it with moussaka. Good guidance is to combine French Salad with dry meat, as it adds moisture. Think chicken breasts, for example.
Russian or French Salad?
Russian Salad has meat as one of the ingredients, French is meatless. The best meats for Russian salad are shredded chicken, bacon, smoked beef, or ham. Fish works too. Wanna transform French to Russian Salad? Just add meat.
Main ingredients – French salad
Mayo – use homemade or buy brand names, like Hellmans, Thomy, etc. This is an important ingredient, so choose your mayo wisely.
Veggies – potatoes, peas, carrots, sour pickles…. You can buy the frozen vegetable mix in stores. There is nothing wrong with it. It saves time and cost.
Eggs – eggs soften the salad. Be generous, 4 Eggs/1 kg of the veggie mix is great.
Mustard – optional ingredient, use whatever you have at hand.
Ingredients
300 g mayonnaise
500 g vegetable mix (potatoes, carrots, beans)
3 small sour pickles – diced
2 eggs – hard-boiled
1 tablespoon mustard
Salt and Pepper
Instructions
Hard-boil eggs – 12 minutes in boiling water
Cook veggies in boiling water – until soft – usually 10 minutes

Dice your pickles into small cubes or pieces
Grab a bowl, put inside hard-boiled eggs, use a fork and crush the eggs
Add cooked veggies, pickles, mayo, mustard, and mix
Season with salt and pepper per taste
Store in the refrigerator, up to 3 days in a closed container
