These just shot straight up, and I don’t want them toppling over when I transplant. No other seedlings did this in the greenhouse, just these guys, so not a sunlight issue? Will burying the stems damage them?

  1. Should be fine to bury like 90% of the stalk. If they’re stretching like this, it is a proximity to light issue. I think those needed to be up-potted a few days ago, but better late than never

Why not just sow beans right into the ground….like normal?

This is why they tell you to direct-seed beans. Not everything needs to be started indoors. Beans grow super fast and transplanting often kills them.

They won’t grow stem roots like tomatoes but it won’t hurt them. Beans germinate too easily/quickly and grow too fast to make transplants worth your time.

You can use little sticks and some of that plant velcro maybe.

I have had no issue burying my provider beans an extra 6” or so in a bed, I didn’t transplant them mind you. Wouldn’t you know it, it shot out a couple of stems under a mulch layer and had some mature beans covered in mulch. Once I saw the layer lifting, and was able to move material around the beans grew proper, no issue

How will Jack climb up them, then?

    Handy hint:
Get some PVC 100mm pipe & cut in half lengthways drill drainage holes every 50mm.
Fill with seed raising mix & bury level in a trench you want to grow in, soon as they peek out you can put your hand at one end & remove the pipe,
    Super easy transplant method 😉
