What’s a mystery? It is obviously a secondary handle.

Op never needed 2 hands with his super buff arm. That second handle is for us weak sauces.

I use it to hang the starter on a hook to cool after use. I have a kid so I can’t leave it somewhere she can reach. It hangs in a way the only part of the starter that is touching anything is where it’s contacting the hook.
I removed it on mine because I don’t have the hand strength of a little girl.

You lift the handle and the coals come out through the bottom

I start my chimney in the fuel ring in my WSM. This ‘handle’ is a perfect fit to clip over the fuel ring to centre the chimney for starting. I then place I burnt coals around the chimney just before pouring to create my minion. Hot fuel in the middle, not started around the edge.

The bigger question is.. Why are they using crap metal that rusts in these things. I went through 3 of them in the span of 5 years. Keeps rusting.. Common Weber.

How heavy is the charcoal you guys use to where you need a second handle?

You use it to swing it around over your head. How else are you going to fling hot coals around? They aren’t going to fling themselves.

Time to RTFM!
“Step 3. The swinging handle is there to help you lift the chimney starter and safely aim the coals just where you want them.”

I use one hand on the handle and one hand on the metal bar to dump out the charcoal into my offset
Optional second handhold was always my thought.
>[The durable, aluminized steel Rapidfire Chimney Starter](https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/accessories-by-grill-type/charcoal-grill-accessories/rapidfire-chimney-starter/7416.html) has two handles to provide optimal control when pouring hot briquettes—wearing gloves, just grab its thermoplastic handle with one hand and its top wire handle with your other hand to direct fuel onto your charcoal grate.

Hey, I remember when my chimney had a handle!

I think its a handle, but I immediately took it off mine as it seems not very useful to me. One hand on the main handle is usually more than enough.
People really are tocked
