I have never canned, but have always been interested in learning how and I’ve been lurking in this sub for a bit to learn.

A few weeks ago, I was talking about wanting to learn how to can with an acquaintance who my husband works with. Yesterday, my husband came home with all of the stuff pictured – the person I was talking to had all this stuff (brand new) in their basement collecting dust, so they gifted it to me. I’m so touched by their generosity and thrilled that I have what I need to get started!

    Nice! You’ll need a lot more jars if you get into it, but the canner and tools are exactly what you need for many years of happy waterbath canning!

  3. Water bath canning is a great way to start. You can use it for jams, jellies, pickles…anything high acid. What a generous gift…perhaps you can gift them a jar of jam to show your appreciation ;).

    When you want to can low acid items like stock, beans, meat, etc…look for a stove top pressure canner. There’s a bit more of a learning curve with it but it’s easy once you get the hang of it.

    The Ball Blue Book is a trusted source. You might want to check on the date of publication for the one you have in case they’ve made any changes since then. Good Luck!
