We often pick up canning supplies from estate sales. This was an unopened box of lids amongst other items. When I saw the warning “OPEN KETTLE CAUTION Open kettle method not be used except for foods which are sealed with paraffin” I wondered how old this box was. Any ideas when this practice would be no longer recommended?

Just going by the store price I would put them at the very minimum of 40 years old. I was buying new lids in the early ’90s for just under $1.00 a dozen, and that wasn’t at any discount at all, far from it. My closest/best resource was a local farm & feed store.
Yeah, early 1980s minimum, and no, they’re not trustworthy or usable. But pretty cool as decorative history.
