I got these OLD pasta sauce jars in a collection of vintage canning supplies. All the other jars are the old mason ones with glass tops.

From what I’ve read, many years ago these jars were the kind you could use for pressure canning but then they were switched to cheaper glass.

I don’t want to trust that blindly, and I also don’t know how to tell if it IS correct, if these are old enough to qualify as the pressure canning safe ones!

Does anyone know for certain??

I’ve used the atlas jars for pressure canning before and had no issues. You have to make sure they’re the old ones that the regular Mouth lids and Rings fit on.

Since they are more than a pint and less than a quart, you must use quart processing times. They actually worked pretty well for candied carrots and chicken stock.

It’s not recommended to reuse them for pressure canning or waterbath/steam canning. The glass for commercial products is thinner than actual canning jars and is intended for one time use. Can you use it? Yes, but there is a higher chance of the jar breaking and ruining your food. I use them for dry storage.

    Can you? Yes.

Is it a good idea? No. It’s worth a dollar a quart to not lose your hard work to breaking jars.

  5. It’s my understanding that the ones that are good for canning should have the Hazel-Atlas HA symbol on the bottom. Without the HA on the bottom, you shouldn’t use it for canning.

You can try anything once but you should manage your expectations.

You could try to can some water and see how they hold up. Then you’re not out any food.

They’re fine if they’re the same thickness as traditional mason jars.

I reuse these jars for bread and butter pickles processed with my sous vide circulator at 183° F for 30 minutes. They are great b/c they’re larger than the Ball jars. The lower temp keeps the pickles crunchy.

I think I read that you can use them for water bath canning but not pressure canning.

I’ve used these with a pressure canner. No issues…

As long as the canning lids fit you’re fine. I use them all the time. Classico tomato sauce is affordable and comes in reusable jars. I buy them when they’re on sale bogo. $1.75 and I get dinner and a free jar…

  13. I use these all the time to can chicken and turkey. Never had an issue.
Gives me just the right amount I need for dinner for my family. I use the directions for processing quarts.

  14. I’ve been canning for a long time now and my mom would save them for me because she knew how much I loved them! Their pint and a half, perfect for my family… I use them in the pressure canner and water bath , haven’t lost one yet!

It will probably be fine. I used the same brand jar as a make-shift double boiler and it never broke.

  16. The pasta sauce companies say they should not be used for canning. The glass is thinner and has a coating to prevent discoloring from their sauce.

I too use them all the time, no problem, I also reuse pint salsa jars also no problem.
