I'm disappointed; the flavor just isn't right. I attempted to recreate the nostalgic taste of a particular doughnut from the 1970s, which was a specialty at Rudy's in Bradley, Illinois, an independent grocery store. Despite following the attached recipe in the comments diligently, it didn't quite hit the mark.

I looked at the recipe. There’s literally no flavor in the donut except a sprinkle of nutmeg? That is the problem. That’s why I tweak my recipes.

Add some Madagascar vanilla, all spice, and cinnamon to the batter. Increase the nutmeg and a dash of salt. Then, you’ll have a decent cake donut! I’ve been making donuts for 2 decades.

They look great though! So it’s not your skill as a baker, it’s probably just the recipe. Adding some vanilla, or some lemon or orange zest, some cinnamon, etc could help kick things up a notch.
