This is my first time using/cooking beans and I’ve only eaten beans with chili or rice. What are some spices or seasonings I can add when I heat it up? It’s going to be a side.

Although we typically use black, red or pinto beans, we drain about half the liquid from the beans, then add 1T of chipotle tabasco and some chopped onion. Quick and flavorful.

IMHO, every savory dish is better if you start by sautéing an onion in a little olive oil. If you have a pepper, hot or sweet, or a clove of garlic, chop that up and add it too. Barring that, or even with the onion, you can go in a couple different directions. 1 would be to add curry powder or turmeric and cumin, maybe with some chili flakes. 2 would be more Italian, with herbs like oregano and basil.

While perfectly acceptable (I bought a can of these yesterday on sale!), these are not the most flavorful or delicious beans. I would add black pepper at the very least, and hot sauce is never a bad idea to spice up bland beans.

Love navy beans. Extra virgin olive oil, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, the teeniest little pinch of cumin and a bay leaf. Pretty simple but I like the bean flavor itself, all that just kinda helps bring it out. I’ve put a little ginger and cinnamon in there before too, and that’s pretty good, almost like curry without the curry powder. But if you do that, use the cinnamon sticks and pull them out. The powder gives them a gross gritty texture.

Beans need a bit (or a lot) of acid. Add lemon / lime / vinegar. If I am eating beans as a side I like to echo my main a bit. Saute some onions and spices that make sense. Cumin is always nice. As well as red pepper flakes. Add salt, pepper, and acid.

The easiest starter way to eat more beans is to just put salad dressing on them. Then you can have them marinade in fridge and put them on salad or as a salad. Italian is a basic choice. I also love a white bean w a balsamic dressing. To make yourself put balsamic vinegar, mustard and olive oil or similar with salt and pepper and if you want add honey or maple syrup. I like just about 1;1 on vinegar to oil with a tablespoon of mustard for about each quarter cup of vinegar. Mix dressings first in bowl then lightly toss beans w spoon in that bowl. Fresh herbs or dried like Italian seasoning is great!

Brothy beans with some kind of veg is my go to. Make sure it’s homemade broth/stock

For drained canned beans: a couple of hours before you open the can and drain: put how ever much olive oil in a bowl (1 tbls, 2) add good sea salt or Maltons roasted salt, fresh cracked black pepper, fresh red Chile flakes (Mexican kind in the bags in the spice aisle), and Mexican oregano crushed in your hand (also bagged and in the spice aisle). Put the bowl and microwave for 15 seconds until you can smell it. Then take it out and let it sit after a stir. Sit for a few hours on the counter and let the flavors meld. Then toss with beans and boom

Can also add cumin, garlic powder, sumac would be awesome too. Enjoy and experiment.

A staple in my house are these beans with some pesto, lemon, garlic, and shallot!

Sage goes really well with beans. Of course garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. Bean soup is also amazing. I use chicken broth and add carrots, celery and onions. And a ham hock. Let it simmer a while until beans are tender. Pull the ham off the hock and stir in. Heavenly.

I love using navy beans and cannellini beans in white chicken chili
