Gristedes Pricing is Out of Control

  1. I used to live on Roosevelt Island and Gristedes was our only grocery store. I knew the prices there were high, but I understood that due to the location and lack of competition. Still, that place was always dingy and run-down, leaving an impression that I then prescribed to all Gristedes markets, although I admittedly haven’t spent much time shopping in their other locations since. Today I was running some errands and wanted to pick up some items for a snack at home so decided to stop at the nearby Gristedes (103rd & Broadway) and was taken aback at some of their prices.

This is nothing new it’s always been pricey to the point of ridiculousness that’s why no one’s ever in there

  3. I’m convinced Gristedes is a money laundering operation. The places are dingy, empty, and massively overpriced. I don’t understand how they stay in business

Gristedes literally made While Foods a BUDGET choice in Manhattan.

That’s how expensive it is, makes Whole Paycheeque foods appear inexpensive.

Ironically they’re still a money losing business being subsidized by the parent company. Suffer from an insane amount of theft

  6. Their prices have always been nuts on stuff like that, Morton Williams too.

FreshDirect’s prices look reasonable in comparison.

  7. Schmeep01

If you like that rotting meat smell, it’s heaven.

  8. Marybelle18

My only Gristedes experience consisted of grabbing a bag of flour tortillas only to have them fall into the floor because the bag had been chewed through.

  9. External-Air-7272

They are Trump supporters! Stay away!!!!!!!

  10. They charged $11 for a 32 oz. almond milk in 2010! Ridiculous place

  11. upyourattraction

The only positive thing I can say about them is that they sell Dr. Brown’s sodas (especially black cherry). None of the other supermarkets near me sell it.

  12. banallthemusic

The prices are the same at most grocery stores here in Bushwick.

I almost always go to Whole Foods for grocery which is hard to explain to my friends out of town that Whole Foods is cheaper

  13. moderndayrusalka

Gristedes my sworn enemy!!! I hate them.

  14. BadCatNoNo

Everywhere I’ve shopped outside of TJ’s is out of control and outrageously expensive. Plus shrinkage of serving sizes.

  15. Well yeah. Gristedes’ entire business model is “ugh, fuck it, I’ll just go to the gristedes around the corner”

  16. chargeorge

I used to live near one, it was so nasty and I could pay round trip for a cab 40 blocks to fairway (rip), get much higher quality and save about 10 bucks total.

  17. Able-Zebra-8965

How’s that place still in business! And with prices like these I really can’t imagine it being open for long.

  18. anarchyx34

Lmao those talentis are $4 right now at my local Shop Rite.

  19. MikeDamone

I’ve got nothing new to add, but fuck Gristedes and their cartoon caricature of a fat robber baron owner!

  20. Mundane-Spray8702

Morton Williams too and half the time stuff rings up incorrectly so be sure to check!

  21. Insomniac_80

That is so expensive you can pretend you are living above the arctic circle!

  22. davejdesign

It’s too bad because I really like the employees at my Gristedes- 2nd Ave near 39th. They were really great during the pandemic. But, yeah I’ve stopped going because the prices are absurd. The only good thing is Brooklyn Bialys and they are like $5 for a pack of six.

  23. FastChampionship2628

Shouldn’t shop Gristedes unless you want to support Trump.

Owner is John Catsimatidis who is an outspoken Trump supporter and hosts a political talk show.

There are so many better options. I would think the only people shopping there are older people who live close to one and don’t have the ability to travel further or shop online.

For anyone else there are far better options including delivery from Fresh Direct etc.

  24. allcirca1

Gristedes is literally just a real estate grab by John Catsimatidis. the stores don’t have to make money, but they do because they are survive in areas that have no other options. It’s been like this for decades

  25. Realistic_Point_5761

I walked into the one on 65th and 1st for a box of cereal, $13 for a regular sized Cheerios. I walked right back out.

  26. Texas_Rockets

Gristedes has never made sense to me. Lower quality for higher cost.

  27. startupdojo

It’s a store for old grannies who are afraid of www and walmart/target/amazon. IMO, most NYC grocery stores aside from TJs are mostly for emergency use.

  28. alarmatom12033

Went into Gristedes the other day because I forgot something in my amazon fresh order…Was honestly hilarious I guess they just moved everything around and there were old people walking all over the store yelling about how they couldn’t find their regular stuff

  29. My friend wanted me to bake her cookies. Went to go check out a baking try. That shit was like $30 for what would be $5 at Walmart. Hell no

  30. ChornWork2

Those prices are crazy. Freshdirect will bring to your door for much lower prices.

  31. Generally only older clientelle use the historical supermarkets in manhattan (gristedes, morton williams) as their prices are astronomical and there are better options (trader joes, costco, even whole foods when there are sales)

  32. Grosstedes!

I wait until the Talenti gelatos go on sale (usually for around $6.99 or so). Those other prices are wack! Rao’s spaghetti sauce is not THAT good!

Sadly, NYC millennials with money to burn on luxury will pay it. If you can afford a $3,575 studio, chances are you won’t mind paying $30 for Avocado oil.

  33. Dusty_Unicorn11

There used to be one by my office and we called it grosstedes

  34. joey22anne

Be careful buying things in sale, it’s usually expired. Don’t buy produce there. Honestly, it’s so janky.
