An acquaintance of mine took a trip to Japan and we were talking about this ingredient that they had tried at a local market. They mentioned it tasted like hops and shared a picture from a cookbook they bought that Google translated into “cod sprouts.”

Does anyone know if this is accurate or if it’s called something else? I would love to try if it ever shows up in the Asian markets I frequent

  1. Tara no me. Aralia elata. Part of sansai, highly seasonal as it’s not a cultivated vegetable. I highly doubt you will find it in any regular Asian markets in North America.

  2. Nyan-gorou

This is a taranome. It is delicious when eaten in tempura.
