DIRTY WATER HOT DOG SHOW RECIPE:
6 cups of water
1 teaspoon Better than Bouillon (Beef)
2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon or 1 tablespoon of ground cumin (your choice)
2 teaspoons of garlic powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger “just a tap”
1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
A tiny pinch of curing salt (optional, to approximate the nitrites you’d most find in hot dog water.)

Whisk everything together in the pot, bring it to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Add the dogs, cover, and cook for at least 30-60 minutes. Serve on steamed buns with your favorite toppings.

hey hot dog homies it’s your host Twan and today we’re taking a viewer request we’re going to make the New York City dirty water dog so let’s get [Music] [Applause] started show heral Hodge 7648 writes great show can you give some just the tip on flavoring your water for the dogs well Harold today’s your lucky day cuz we’ve got a recipe for [Music] you so for those of you that don’t know a dirty water dog isn’t just dirty water in New York City a lot of people think oh man the hot dog water’s been sitting there all day it’s just a bunch of dirty hot dog water well let me tell you something they change that hot dog water out every night and the thing that makes it dirty is all the spices we’re not just going to start with water we’re starting with a little bit of this better than bullon now the dogs are already salty so we don’t want to do too much in there we just want a little bit of flavor so we’re going to take that and then we’re going to whisk that [Music] in see it’s already looking dirty and we’re going to take a little bit of our granulated garlic we’re going to put that in that’s about roughly a teaspoon 2 teaspoons 2 teaspoons of onion powder that goes right in now this is a little trick just a pinch of the curing salt now the curing salt you don’t need a whole lot and plus you don’t want a whole lot because this got sodium nitrate in it you got to be careful and make sure that you don’t put too much in it’s not good for you next we’re going to do a little bit of Ginger just a tap this is about uh say maybe half a teaspoon we’re going to do a little bit of cumin this is a classic uh classic spice right here that goes into the dirty water dogs and uh again about a half a teaspoon of and maybe about a tablespoon of that it’s your dogs you can put as much in it as you want so next this is a classic Hot Dog spice nutmeg and I think we’re going to go in with about a teaspoon of nutmeg as well now I’m not really measuring because that’s not what I do I don’t really care but if you need a recipe we’ll have one in the description below and then finally we’re going in with a couple of dashes of red wine vinegar I’d say that’s probably 2 tablespoons full once that’s in we’re going to give all of this a whisk and we’re going to let go man it smells great already so next up all we got to do is get these dogs in the water and get them [Music] hot all right we’ve got two kinds of dogs we got the B’s head skin on and we got the bors’s head skinless we’re going to test these dogs out in both the dirty water and the regular water and see if there’s a difference all right well we brought our dirty water dog and our plain water up to a boil and then we just we backed it off just a little bit because we want these dogs to simmer so first in the drink are our skin- on dogs boom now we’ve got our two skinless dogs they’re a little firmer than the other dogs which is fine so it’ll be interesting to see if they take up more of the dirty water dog or the plain water now we wait 30 minutes these babies are going to be plump ready to [Music] eat one eternity later all right it’s been 30 minutes and uh I’ve steamed up some buns so we got them ready so what we’re going to do is we’re going to try each dog and you’re want to see how they compare so first up is our dirty water dog with the [Music] skin the Dirty Water Dog right here skin on oh yeah these buns are perfect man this water smells amazing you get like some of the sour smell from the red wine vinegar you get all these spices coming through it just really really smells good reminds me of that uh of those New York City hot dog carts so we’ve got our plain dog and we’re going to take a quick look so we’re comparing the two dogs already you can see the dirty water dog has a little more color on it than the plain water dog so just a make sure we don’t mess with any of the flavor between the two dogs we’re raw dogging it today oh my this is the dirty water skin on [Music] dog this is the plain water dog we give this a quick bite the dirty water dog has a little more salt flavor to it just a little bit of extra flavor versus the plain water dog I think the dirty dogs’s got it for now we’re going to go to the skinless though we got these nice steamy buns we got the skinless dirty skinless clean [Music] dog first up no [Music] bun I would have thought that the skin would have had more flavor from all of the different spices that were in there but it really didn’t take on much more of the flavor uh than the uh than the skin on dog so here we are this is the plane I mean I knew what I was getting there not as much flavor and uh still you know not that good all right so here we have [Music] it our four dogs the test we’ve got our dirty water skin on we’ve got our clean skin on dog dirty water skinless and Plain Jane not impressed Battle Royale between dirty dog versus clean dog it’s time to pick a winner and I already know where I’m going with this it’s the skin on dirty dog I’ll tell you what you could taste the cumin you could taste the red wine I’m we let it go for about 30 minutes but you could let that go for about an hour and it would just pick up those flavors even more I’m telling you this is the way to go if you want to do dirty water dogs skin on dirty water dog it’s our wiener here’s mud in your eye [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]

  1. Sold! I have my kids spoiled on grilled dogs that they roll their eyes and won't even try a boiled hotdog…which is my goto. Gonna give the dirty dog a shot see if I can convert them. Great video, thanks!
