I am just a cake decorator with 8 months experience. I promise I don’t charge $100+ for these.
I work at a grocery store. The boss said I can do Pride Month stuff for a big corporate visit, which they all ended up liking. I’m still pretty new, so any suggestions or tips on technique would be GREATLY appreciated. 🥰

Aw it makes me happy seeing these cute pride cakes !

Maybe draw out the lettering with a toothpick first and then go over with the icing. It will help your letters be neater.

I think your piping is wonderful!

Print out different messages. Put them under a sheet of wax paper and practice by tracing them. Scrape and repeat until you can loosen up your wrist enough to be comfortable writing. But your piping is nice, though.

This is so cute ❤️

With the writing, be sure to release your grip/pressure before you pull the bag up and away from the cake. It’ll reduce the tails that you get. Also if you have a slightly damp paint brush you can kinda squash those back down to smooth out the writing. The other comments here have great advice too!
I know nothing about baking, I only follow this subreddit I guess out of masochism as a diabetic. But I think they look good, I like how clean the first one is and how bright the second one is!

Lovely! The rosette border especially looks so fluffy and delicious! If you wanted to smooth down the pokey ends of your letters, get some water on the tip of your finger and gently pat it down. Sometimes I used edible luster dust and tap down anything that’s sticking up. I also use water and an offset to smooth down or blend when I have lines such as your flag. Just a little dampness and it helps dissolve the sugar a little for better smoothing. If you use too much water you risk your colors running and bleeding, especially darker ones like black and red. Beautiful, kind work!!

Maybe place the colourful piping ring a bit off the edge of the cookie to make the whole piece appear rounder / more symmetrical

The cookie cake looks awful.

Practice writing on a cake board.. you can wipe off the icing and practice again and again. Make sure you have a good grip on the bag & it has enough pressure to keep it smooth when you’re writing. Try to end writing to the side vs up (how you tip your hand). The more you practice the better you’ll get! Good job! Glad they loved it! Hopefully you can make many more!! That’s the one thing I miss about working at the grocery store.. writing on cakes, decorating cupcakes & making fruit tarts.

at the end of the day if you have free time, practice writing on a plastic cake cover. once done, scrape off and add back to bag or throw out.
working at a grocery bakery really helped me with my penmanship in and out of cake writing!

You’re off to a great start. Continue to practice over and over. It does seem like you haven’t been practicing consistently

These are so lovely. If I saw one in my grocery store it would make my day. 🏳️🌈

For the layout (esp with the 2nd image), try making the message (text) the focal point and then adding decor (hearts) around it. You can play with the size and style of the letters (cursive vs San serif) to add emphasis in the right places. Don’t need to make room for too many hearts/swirls, better to have a few excellent hearts to make it look professional vs a bunch that try to fill up the space.
If your company allows, you might experiment with multiple colors in a single piping bag. Just need to get the right blend of color to prevent it from looking muddy. I imagine a nice base white with a few pale streaks of red, green, blue, yellow for example.

I can’t give you more tips than them, as I’m more into non-edible art, just enjoy baking. However, I want to say, keep it up! They look good and can only get better from here. Keep experimenting and you might even find a better solution for you than what tips the pros can offer. Also I truly appreciate how kind you are in the replies 🙂 maybe take some tips from other areas of art and you can come up with more unique designs, ideas, and techniques.

Honestly I’d be so happy if someone got me a cake just like that.

Very nice!
For your hearts and flags maybe try a stencil for sharper edges: https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2011/06/making-a-paper-cookie-stencil/
