Other than the supplement ad from the content creator in the breakfast section of the video, I found this very informational. We're planning a trip to Italy in 2025, and my YouTube's cookies, which have already been suggesting med diet videos, are now suggesting videos related to eating in Italy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkaJu7d6A9M&list=WL&index=5&ab_channel=IreneItalian

The only pertinent part about this video is portion control. The “what you eat” is a lot less relevant to weight than the “how much you eat.”

My family is 100% Italian, but American. My great-grandparents (from Italy) were generally thin, my grandparents (1st Gen) were not overweight really, my aunts and uncles (second generation) were morbidly obese.

My great grandparents drank wine and pecked at small dishes of rich Italian foods. My grandparents did the same, but mixed in some American foods. But they never really took seconds. My aunts and uncles gorged on food, American and Italian. They took seconds, thirds, and dessert.

My family in Portugal eats the same, and everyone is thin or, at best, stocky. Anyone under 50 is basically just thin and healthy weight.

My genetics are exactly the same as these Mediterranean relatives. I started eating like my uncles and gained 50 lbs. I started eating more like my other relatives, I lost 50 lbs. It’s about quantity and quality more so than the type of food specifically.

Italians eat 2 meals a day and walk a lot.

Americans eat 3 meals a day and are generally desk jockeys.

    That’s most of the answer.

30-40 years of slightly overeating makes a lot of fat 50-60 year olds.
