I used Preppy Kitchen’s Vanilla Cake recipe (which was delicious) and his buttercream frosting.

I have to admit, I didn’t really care for the frosting, but I think that’s more me coming to terms with the fact that I don’t like homemade American buttercream. It’s too… buttery and sweet. 🥲

This is one of the first fully decorated cakes I’ve made since a medical issue basically tanked my fine motor and hand/eye coordination. (I also didn’t have all the tools I needed, but I do love to improvise.) I’m pleased with how it came out though! If I keep trying, I hope I can keep improving.

Quick question: I also find frosting in a bit over buttery and sweet, but I also hate the whipped stuff. Is there a good recipe for a less sweet version? I’ve had good luck making dark chocolate icing, but that’s it.

The Juneteenth colors are red, white, and blue. It’s not a Pan-African holiday, but an American one, and the celebration flag is based on the Texas flag given the history

It’s amazing!!! Happy Juneteenth! And you did a great job given your supply limitations and your medical issue. I hope it is well managed and you’re getting great care.

As someone who also detests American buttercream, I love Swiss meringue buttercream. If you want any recipe suggestions, I’m happy to share.

May you have many more great looking bakes that are just as delicious!
