00:00 Early Morning Gardening
01:52 The Pleasure of Gardening
04:39 Difficulties and Effort
05:26 Why We Labor

[Music] High summer is here and we are about to hit the peak of production in the Rock lined Market style rows of garden beds that occupy a quar acre of our property after feeling some arbitrary need to prove myself I’m focusing this year instead on remembering the fact that I actually really enjoy gardening and not just the Harvest the best moments often happen out in the garden though there’s often sweat dripping off my brow and dirt under my fingernails this is where I am when the kids Sprint out to meet me and see what I’ve got in my basket it’s where the dog will grab a potato and playfully toss it across the yard it’s also where Stuart and I have our best conversations before the kids and the sun are awake our only witness is the birds that have come to call the garden home for the season [Music] I don’t Garden out of fear or obligation to me the pleasure of gardening is twofold first we get to experience a taste of produce that far surpasses any vegetable you can buy the kind where the tomato is still hot from the Summer sun when it hits your supper plate and the potato is so fresh that it makes a popping sound when it’s plucked from the soil there is no carrot no beet no cabbage available for purchase that will surpass that which is grown in our own soil this alone is worth the effort that is of course if you’re the sort who finds pleasure in eating such Delights [Music] [Music] secondly guard ging cultivates good habits in me it encourages me to be disciplined thoughtful and to creatively solve [Music] problems gardening helps me to stay physically fit while at the same time giving me a place for mental thoughtfulness and relaxation the art of growing teaches me to think ahead to pay attention to weather patterns to read nature as if it were a story the act of taking care of something when it’s notoriously difficult makes one a sturdier person overall [Music] [Music] there is much to dislike about gardening watering issues wasps squash beetles endlessly weeding no really it’s endless and an overall depth of effort it is sweaty laborious work no doubt but if humans quit particip ipating in hard tasks where will we end up stroking our pleasures and Idols mindlessly watching with ease as Decades of our life pass by [Music] so we labor in the cool of the morning In the Heat of the day and in the Blazing heat and in the chill of Autumn we labor when we feel like it and when we don’t whether there is a bumper crop filling our baskets or when there is no Harvest at all [Music] we labor because there is value to us as people in doing hard things and in vibrant delicious food a meaningful Harvest can only come with a meaningful effort cheers

  1. Oh Shay, I needed to hear this. It's only July and my garden is wearing me out. Gonna keep grinding and caring for it and loving it as it more than returns the favor. We can do hard things! Amen!

  2. Just watched this with my kiddos and they loved it. Their favorite part was your beautiful doggo. Six-year-old Julia also loves your twinkle lights! Inspiring as we begin our garden journey together this summer!

  3. I have a small garden this year. It's been dry and yet there are bugs galore, bites galore too. I don't know if they are mosquitoes, chiggers, or both but I have them all over my legs and ankles. I just had to complain about it.

  4. Your not only one of THE best homesteaders out here🫶🏼but Mann you know how to put out a beautiful story for your viewers!! You know how to captivate us even when the work isn’t so fun lol! Wonderful wonderful channel thanks soo much!!🙌🏼

  5. That was an amazing video. Look at what goodness happens when you get up, go and give love to your garden. Best to you and the farming family
    dear friend.

  6. I really do think of you every time I walk into my kitchen and see my cabbage/kraut print hanging on my wall. Your garden is more than beautiful. Thank you again for sharing your little plot of heaven with us.❤️

  7. How are your cabbages so gorgeous? Mine are so eaten up from slugs and cabbage moths. I’m going to try again for a fall crop but this is my third year of cabbage failure.

  8. Wow!!! What massive cauliflower/cabbage. Y'all have a plentiful garden. Does my heart good to see this blessing you have. 🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿
