  1. I'm in 8a, near Memphis and I'm planning a second round of green beans, red cabbage, bok choi, collards, kale, chard, and diakon. In October I'll plant garlic and shallots.

In my area I can overwinter pretty much all of my brassicas. Most of them even survived that arctic blast we had a few years ago. We got down to -10 for a week, and all my kale, collards, and chard survived with minimal damage.

  2. Great video! Love the list-I love growing spinach in the fall and have had some luck with Sun angel variety. I live in Georgia so I am always looking for varieties that are slow to bolt.

  3. Im in Central Florida Orlando area and according to my notes our first day below 90 deg last year was oct 28th. We also never had a frost or freeze all winter.
    I hope this helps someone

  4. Thank-you for this subject. I’m a longtime subscriber, but I recently moved to 9a low country South Carolina. Heat and humidity are stifling. What an adjustment, your experience is invaluable and welcomed!

  5. In Austin 9a it's always a race in fall to beat or avoid the frost while missing the heat and pests of September. I use 1/2 inch pex water pipe to make low tunnel frost protection.

  6. Good morning went to take up my corn and I pull the roots along with the cornstalks and found some grub worms. Can I leave them or need to get rid of them. Will they turn into something that’s bad for the garden as bad insects that I have to take care of later. Thank You

  7. Glad to see you didn't get washed away by Debbie. 😁 So you mentioned timing for planting short day onion sets here in 9a. What about from seed? When would you suggest direct sowing these? I got some red creole and and early texas grano seeds i wanna try out this season. Or should i just do my own starts? I've never done onions in trays before… Thanks

  8. Thanks for all of the great videos Travis! Q: When you're starting your cool season crop seeds in trays in August, isn't the heat in the greenhouse too much? I'm in zone 9a too and have a greenhouse with rollup sides and my greenhouse is HOT in August. Do you do anything different? Start seeds indoors or anything?

  9. Up in central Maine (zone 4/5), in July and into August, I start seeds and direct seed throughout my garden stuff for my "fall" garden — really can't call it a "winter" garden because we get hard frosts starting sometimes in November that wipes pretty much everything out, so ideally I have things planted to enjoy the "fall" garden in Sept-November. Up here a true winter garden requires some type of cover/hoop house, which I do want to explore one of these days. My biggest issue is not just sitting there and admiring the fall garden and to get to harvesting, because those first hard frosts can come and just wipe you out overnight, no matter how lovely the fall garden was looking the day before.

  10. I always try to plant my English Peas in the 12 days of Christmas. Dec 25th to Jan. 5.and the a second planting in late Jan.( just in case the late frost hits when the peas are in flower). This gives the peas enough time to make before the 80's arrive.

  11. Here in Arkansas I'm in zone 7b, right on the 8a line. Ive over wintered kale and carrots here before. Going to try to put in a little more effort to over winter more this year. Been hard growing my transplants out so far this year with the bug pressure. Even non organic pesticides aren't able to keep the bugs off my brassicas, eating them down as quick as they pop

  12. I have a raised bed of asparagus. One I cut ferns back, would putting spinach in the bed for fall, present any issues?

  13. Zone 8A/8B in southeast NC and I follow the same planting schedule as you guys. I also over winter short day onions and softneck garlic and they do just fine.

  14. I'm in central South Carolina and would like to try some of your brussels sprouts and cauliflower in grow bags. What time frame would you suggest for starting seeds indoors for later transplant into the bags? Our average temp in October is 78/54 and November 69/45. Thanks John

  15. Just started growing a fall garden a few years ago here in southeast Oklahoma. Haven’t been able to overwinter anything except some multiplying onions. Last couple years the temps got pretty low froze all I had planted. Everything does taste better in the fall tho. Fixing to put cabbage, greens, beets, carrots and a few tomato plants in the ground In the next couple weeks.

  16. Here in zone 5b, I don’t really do a winter garden. I have some kale, though, that’s overwintered in my raised beds for the past few years 🙂

  17. Got my cabbage, kale and collard seeds started. @lazydog you had asked on an earlier video if anyone had tried the Top Chop variety of collards. I have started a 9 cell tray of seeds for my raised bed. I’ll let you know how they perform for me. I also started the GA Southern that you recommend so I can see how they compare.
Please include info on timing for starting our short day onion seed for transplants in the upcoming videos.
BTW – those Louisiana Shallots in your site are 🎉 fantastic. Jumped out of the ground and kicking in less than a week! I’m a believer ~ Thanks again
