Went to visit my parents this afternoon and my dad proudly showed me this absolute monster of a tomato he grew. I have never seen anything like this before, is it the type of tomato or just a mutation?

That is catfacing. Catfacing is a common disorder in tomatoes that results in misshapen fruit, often with deep grooves, scars, and a distorted appearance, as seen in your dad’s tomato.
Causes of Catfacing: Catfacing is often caused by exposure to cold temperatures during the early stages of flower development. When the tomato plant experiences temperatures below 60°F, especially during the night, it can interfere with the normal development of the flowers, leading to irregularly shaped fruit. Some heirloom and beefsteak tomato varieties are more prone to catfacing due to their genetic makeup. These varieties tend to produce larger fruits, which are more susceptible to developmental issues. Inconsistent or incomplete pollination can also lead to catfacing, where only parts of the fruit develop properly, while others do not. Other environmental stresses, such as drought, poor soil conditions, or uneven watering, can exacerbate the condition.
While catfacing affects the appearance of the tomato, it does not usually affect the taste. The tomato is still perfectly edible, though it may be more difficult to prepare due to its irregular shape.

I cut through the center of the affected parts. It makes it easier to cut off the bad bits.

I thought this was a AI generated photo of a tomato hand for a second… Damn skynet, I cannot even scroll “reddit” without mentally filtering out Potential AI photos.

You’ve not mentioned the variety. Some tomato types are simply more prone to catfacing and they tend to be the tastier types

A variety of things but certain varieties of heirlooms are especially prone to it. Sometimes with inconsistent watering it can aggravate it.

Clearly that tomato was trying to take over the world by developing a brain first. It would forever be linked to all tomato vines in the world and direct a whole army of tomatoes to lead all of us humans into submission.
