I checked out the brick and mortar location of Banh by Lauren today since I never had it. What do you think of their chiffon cake? $13/slice seems egregious to me, and it’s small. I only got their honeycomb cake for $5- it’s small too 😫

Tastes great! Love what they’re doing with Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian flavors and pastries.

Been wanting to go there. I was at Golden Diner across the street a couple weeks ago, but they weren’t open that day.

I saw the hype for this place and had to try it out for myself having grown up eating these kinds of desserts. The cake slice was the most dense chiffon I’ve ever eaten and their banh bo nuong was not worth the $5. It may have been an off-day but I don’t expect to return.

I’ve heard mixed reviews. I get that she worked at gramercy tavern and love that she’s bringing more attention to southeast Asian dessert but her desserts are way too expensive. Id probably try a slice just to try once.

I do really like the honeycomb cake and the macaron I tried– red oolong. Both were so good but SO EXPENSIVE and so small 😭 I also really like their lime coffee drink and their limeade by itself. It’s just super $$$.

$13 a slice? That sounds more expensive than lady M which to date has been the most expensive slice of cake I’ve eaten! (Worth the price tho)

Ugh as a fellow Vietnamese I want to support Vietnamese food but it’s sooo hard to when prices are astronomical!!

I get that rent in NYC is expensive but ffs $13 for a slice?!!

The dessert wasn’t overly sweet and was good but nothing to write home about. I live a few mins away from this place and I’d never go back again based off what they’re charging. It’s a bit overrated and quite of a price gauge tbh.

Yes it is expensive but you’re getting an artisanal product not Sara Lee. Those layers look so even and clean!

Gotta remember that this is a small boutique shop that does not have economies of scale. Given where NYC rent is and with inflation at where it is bet even this is very slim margins. For perspective a Grande Latte at Starbucks will set you back $6-8.

It was not good. I supported them when they were a pop-up, but I won’t be returning. Saving that money for Lady M and Lady Wong Asian flavors.

I had such high expectations since I was following her on IG for yearssss but was so disappointed when i finally tried the cake. I tried thai tea cake – flavor was good but it was sooo dense :(. Truly no idea how she dares to call it chiffon cake

Maybe check out lysee for they price point that’s actually worth the value.

The only place worth paying $10+ a slice for is lady M. Its almost always unanimously liked at the dinner table. Hard to impress asian elderly too but they ask for seconds and thirds. The pandan cake and chiffon were disappointing.

  14. I know Kitchen Co Ut and their sister takeout spot Banh Mi Co Ut also sell the banh bo nuong pandan honeycomb cake. I think I saw it at Banh Mi Saigon too?

Yeah I’m not paying $13 a slice for cake. I checked their menu and the other items are around $5 which is reasonable.

This place just wasn’t that good. Bummed out. I also felt their coffee was not authentic in the slightest.
