I went to my local Cost Plus World Market because they were said (by Google) to carry the Matiz sardines. They did, I picked up a couple of cans. I saw on my post here yesterday that Nuri is highly recommended. And saw a negative comment about the Porthos. Any other recommendations here? (I’m mostly interested in sardines. Have not tried mackerel or octopus, though may at some point.)

  1. I’ve had a mixed experience with Porthos sardines, and I don’t regularly reach for them nowadays. Recently, though, I received a gift of two cans of the sardines in “hot vegetable oil”—I think it’s sunflower—which is something I’d never pick myself, and both were surprisingly nice. The fish were nice, no scales, skin not beat up, the oil pleasant, and there actually was at least a bit of heat—nothing crazy, but still a presence. I may be giving Porthos another try.

Meanwhile, what keeps catching my eye at World Market are the “caviar” options. I know not a single damn thing about fish roe, but that lack of knowledge is starting to strike me as weird, really. Given how much darn fish-in-tins I snorfle down, shouldn’t I give this stuff a try? Or two? But so far all I’ve done is ponder.

  2. I love the canned seafood culture in Portugal and Spain. If I had the money I would buy these.

In my city we had a seafood restaurant that tried to push canned seafood on the menu. I enjoyed what I ordered. But generally people in my area probably equate canned seafood as always inferior.

I’ve tried the teriyaki, tomato sauce, and smoked deens from porthos and loved each of them. Would buy again

I actually love the Porthos teriyaki sardines – they make a great lunch eaten over rice with some veggies, furikake/sesame seeds, scallions, etc.

  5. Those Riga golds on the right side are excellent, and so is the Coles snow crab

I can’t get over the prices of Fishwife… sometimes over double the price of other significantly better brands. Does the quirky package design keep them in business?
