Used black cocoa for the dye and then a softer white buttercream to paint the scene on the top. Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream! No one was quite sure how to pull off a haunted train theme, but I had the cake down!

Great job! We were a scent free family for 17 years and then my oldest son went and bought himself cologne … you can only hold them off for so long 🙂

How did you get it so black?! I tried to make spider man waffles and could only get grey-ish lol.

Did you end up using activated charcoal in the buttercream? Or dye?

Not sure why people are freaking out over the term “dye free” or the idea of it. The kid or someone in the family probably has allergies to artificial dyes if you’re using dye free. Not that hard to figure out 💀 fantastic work!!

Cute cake! The 8 year old will dodge a colorful bullet. I did a traditionally dyed black frosting for one of my sons cakes and the lil bugger pooped blue-green for a few days. He thought it was awesome. 😄.
