  1. Depends on your climate. Mine are a fair bit bigger than yours but I’ll get first frost early to mid November. They’ll not do much growing after that, some but not a lot. I do often however harvest sprouts up until the end of December.

Mind are coming up really nicely! I’ll try to take a pic later today!!

  3. Good luck!

This is my first year growing them too. I unintentionally planted them in rather heavy shade, and had pretty bad aphid attacks this year. Of the 6 plants I planted in May only 1 is still hanging in there. I think it might be starting to produce sprouts. I’m hoping I’ll actually get some sprouts in the next month or so, and that they won’t be riddled with bugs.

Don’t forget you can eat the leaves too. The lower leaves start to droop like a few of yours are, I harvest them and used them in stir fries and curries.

I hope you have success, but IMO that container is way too small. I grow in the ground, with poor clay soil, and they’re still 18″ diameter, and minimum 1.5′ tall. If you start getting insect damage, the #1 culprit is cabbageworm (from little white moths), which is easily controlled with BT. No rush to harvest, they’re freeze-tolerant into at least the low 20s (tho maybe more vulnerable in containers). Like someone else said, the leaves are tasty – when you cut the stalk, save all the healthy leaves, strip out the main stem, and saute/braise like collards/kale.

Omg…. please move these to a much larger pot asap. They look great, but they need a LOT more space. Think at least 10 gallons each.

I’m growing some “Igor” from seed, but I lost track of the seedlings, and I think only one has made it. I was trying to return to full time work when I was supposed to be starting winter brassicas, so I missed a lot. First time grower, too.

Edit: 5 gallons is the minimum size you should aim for. These plants need space. 🙂

I have grown them once successfully. I would suggest your container may be too small for a bountiful harvest. In my experience they seemed to be heavy feeders. I’m in Canada however and grew them in a greenhouse. Good luck!

Yes. Brussels Sprout plants get HUGE. IF you want them to thrive, you need to get the in the ground so their roots have plenty of room.
