Dinner at Obélix – 700 N Sedgwick St, Chicago, IL 60654

Had a last-minute chance to celebrate a friend’s birthday at Obélix with a group of 6. Here’s what I tried:

• Sourdough Bread: House-made Butter

• Escargot A La Bourguignonne: Snails, Garlic, Parsley - $16

• Bluefin Tuna Crudo: Bluefin Tuna, Watermelon, Cherry Tomato, Chili - $21

• Steak Tartare: Filet Mignon, Shaved Foie Gras, Corn-Truffle, Froggy Meadow Farm Peppers & Mushrooms, Homemade Sourdough - $29

• Côte De Boeuf: 12 oz. USDA Prime Ribeye, French Fries, Maitre d’Butter, Sauce Au Poivre - $63

• 90 Day Dry Aged Truffle Ribeye: 90 Day Dry Aged Ribeye, Truffle Sauce, Shaved Black Truffle - $110

Overall Rating: 8.6/10

Food – 8.2. Obélix is definitely an intimate spot, and bringing a larger group of 6 felt like it took away from the experience. In hindsight, a smaller group might have allowed us to enjoy the dishes more fully. The truffle steak and escargot were standout dishes, but everything else felt just okay.

Service – 7.2. There were some hiccups, like a waiter who wasn’t having the best day and a split table on steak preferences, which seemed to impact the overall experience. We got some attitude from one of the waiters but we let it slide because we thought she was having a bad day.

Ambiance – 8.7. The atmosphere was intimate, and I think a smaller group would have better enjoyed the setting. Would definitely recommend going with a smaller group to fully enjoy what this place has to offer.

I always make it a point to revisit a restaurant even after a mediocre or subpar experience. I believe that everyone, including restaurants, can have an off day, and it’s only fair to give them another chance before making a final judgment.

Would I go again? Yes, but with a smaller group.
