I consider myself to have a relatively high spice threshold and found myself at a Mexican restaurant on holiday in Spain, which I (wrongly) assumed would have a spice level catered more towards European tourists. I was wrong.

They provided this waiver, which I figured was just scare tactics, before giving me 8 wings doused in the spiciest mf concoction I've ever come across. I should've known when I saw the cook in the kitchen injecting the wings with spice that it was going to be my demise. The entire kitchen staff came out to watch me and my friend attempt these like we were Maximus and Tigris. I took my first few bites and thought "hey this isn't so bad". Oh how foolish. Once I finished the second, the sweats started immediately and I started hiccuping, tearing up, etc – the full works.

Thankfully reason kicked in and I decided to just take the L and not go any further. My friend got through 4 and also gave up. I sat there in complete agony while "I just died in your arms tonight" by Cutting Crew played over the speakers. Poetic. The damage was lasting, proper scorched earth. I couldn't properly enjoy anything for the next 2 days and spent the rest of that day lying in bed and having panic attacks thinking somehow the spice had entered my bloodstream and I was going to die. Had to cancel plans and dinner reservations for the next day because I couldn't stomach anything yet and the inside of my mouth felt like Balrog in the depths of Khazad Dum.

Moral of the story – spice challenges can be fun to attempt, but don't do them if you have anything planned for the next 2 days.

Tldr: paid €35 for 2 spicy wings and spent 2 days out of action and with a pissed off gf – don't do spice challenges on holiday

  1. I would say never do a food or drink challenge on vacation. Some people attempt to “drink like a local”, which also could put you out for 2 days.

they do business so figures they would want to be as hard as possible so they gain money from it :p

  3. Dang just a pic of the stupid gimmick waiver? Nothing of the actual food?

/u/DekeTheGoat you’re saying you had mouth pain for 2 days? Versus maybe 15-30m max?

I’d be tempted if I signed a waiver like this, to actually ask what’s in the stuff. I’ve done a few waivers over the years, which oddly enough the one was spicy but it didn’t ruin my night, in fact reheating the leftovers (like 8 left out of a 16 piece wing) they weren’t all that hot so idk if it evaporated or what

8 wings in four minutes, best thing to do is spend the first couple minutes stripping the meat from the bone and then stuffing as much in your mouth in one go. Eating them one by one just makes it worse.

this could be an episode of benidorm.

Don’t do a spicy challenge when you have to work the next day.
