What I always thought was a secret family recipe is actually just the recipe on the back of the bag of Mrs. Wages pickling lime, with the addition of a TON of green food coloring. Turned out fantastic. Recipe included in last picture. Add 6-10 drops of green gel food coloring in step 3. The pickles are a little tart if you eat them right away, but it mellows out after a few days/weeks.

Picture 1 – 6 pint jars of my Grandmas “green pickles” on the counter right after processing. They’re a deep green through the pickle slices and the pickling liquid due to green food coloring.
Picture 2 – a couple bright green pickles on a pulled pork sandwich.
Picture 3 – My grandmas recipe. Which is a cutout from a bag of Mrs Wages pickling lime from probably 40 years ago.
😱
How did you uncover this family secret? Peek in grandma’s recipe box?
I love this.
This is the closest I’ve seen to my grandma’s recipe, but hers adds celery seed and cloves. They are sweet and spicy like Christmas, not chilis. I can’t go without them. But we don’t add the green color.
We call them “Nuclear Pickles” in our family 😂
Put them on a cut glass platter with cinnamon spiced apple rings, and there’s the holidays
