Every year I’ve gardened in my current location I’ve been able to start my cool weather veggies indoors around Labor Day and plant them out around October first.

This year they grew a little faster than usual for some reason and I wound up having to plant them out about two weeks ago.

This summer just won’t end. We’re looking down the barrel of a legit October heatwave.

I have everything fully shade clothed and I plan on watering regularly to keep the soil temp down a bit. Not sure what else I can do to try and get them through this.

I planted my brassicas Sept 1st, and have had temps like these all month. They got used to it, and I’m not too worried about the heat until they start heading up. If it’s hot when they form heads I think they’re toast lol, so fingers crossed

Oh wow. That sucks. I am sorry. I hope they come through ok!

I just started my broccoli from seed a few days ago.

You look like you live near me with those temperatures!

I’m in a similar climate and I just grow collards and kale now for this reason. Those two things seem to still do reliably well. The weather has become too chaotic to get good broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts though.

Get some shade cloth. I had to do that for my garden during that heatwave we had down here in LA. I only had green beans but they looked great during and after. They didn’t drop flowers or anything. I got 55% shade. You can use bed sheets until it comes in.
