Went to the new Veselka in Williamsburg, and it just made me want to eat at Karczma. So I ordered from there the next week, and it’s visibly lacier and crunchier.

  1. It was a while back, but I personally found the ones at Pyza to be the best restaurant rendition I had. Even had two people on the way to JFK catching a flight to WAW ordering a bunch to eat on the way.

Homemade will always come out better for these—Karczma’s were also on the thick + oily side when I tried them.

    Veselka is Ukrainian
    Karczyma is Polish.
    Pyza has the best food.

Thirding Pyza. Also, I like Polka Dot’s as well.

I will go all out on karczma > veselka. I could write a little book. But karczma is about as legit as you’ll get in america – from the food to the service. I love that place.

Veselka is ok, I’ll never say no to borsch. But it’s not that great, i’m not sure what the draw is. Maybe just famous for being famous. Even their borsch is honestly mediocre. Maybe it was good years ago, but not now

And polish and ukrainian cuisine isn’t quite the same – so it’s not exactly a fair comparison. But for service, food, and vibe alone, I love karczma.

I used to love going to Veselka, but the last two times I was there it was terrible, the food was tasteless and the service was bad. In 10 minutes they brought us the appetizer and the main course, I finished my drink and no one came to ask if I wanted a refill, when I finished eating with my husband, a guy started to take things off the table and the waitress brought us the check, didn’t bother to ask us if we wanted anything else or dessert

Veselka used to be my late night jam a decade ago when I lived in the city. Shame to hear they’ve gone downhill.

Also, RIP Odessa. I’ll never be the same.

Karczma will always be my fav because atmosphere and vibe matter. It feels like a family gathering at my polish grandmothers place.

Pierozek has very good food but is somewhat limited.

Go to Pierożek in Greenpoint and you will forget about both.
