Crazy this would cost $100+ at a steakhouse but I made it at home for under $15

This Wagyu sirloin was on sale for $8 at my local Ralph’s (Kroger).

A little Daddy Hinkles marinade plus Daddy Hinkles dry rub.

I put it in the InstantPot Sous Vide for 2.5 hours at 130 degrees.

Reverse seared in the ripping hot cast iron for about 40 seconds per side, and then 10-30 on the edges.

    Tender flavorful and delicious.

This is why restaurants are turning into ghost towns!

$100 for a sirloin, spring mix and ranch? $20 at applebees bro

  4. ILegendaryBrolyI

how do i make the sauce on the potato?

Eh, for an accurate cost comparison, you need to factor in things like:
    – utility bills

    – your time spent shopping, cleaning, and prepping

    – clean up time

    – rent

    – insurance

If restaurants were such a scam, they would make money. 50% of restaurants never turn a profit.

  6. I can see both sides. Definitely nothing wrong with cooking a good steak at home, knowing exactly how it was prepared and it being cooked to your liking. I enjoy doing that. However, I also enjoy a nice steakhouse every now and then. Some things I just don’t feel like attempting at home after a long week. Going and getting an appetizer of calamari with a prime cut ribeye and side of lobster mac with old fashioned to boot is a nice treat.

If I paid $100 for that I’d also never be inclined to eat at a steakhouse again.

Looks perfectly done and delicious but whatever cut of steak you think you’re comparing it to at a steakhouse (at least, the ones by me) is not even close to what I’d pay that kind of money for. A $100 steak near me is at least a ribeye, strip or porterhouse, at least 10-12oz, dry aged and prime.

Wait – are you just proud of your cook and exaggerating your point? Damn it! My reddit cynicism strikes again. Looks delicious fellow carnivore.

  8. Our Outback is 32.00 for an 18 oz bone ribeye. It’s perfect everytime. I am a frequent patron. I don’t have to cook, no cleaning, and enough left for a Fajita the next day.

I used to go to steakhouses for a nice steak. That was until I watched a bunch of YT videos and started cooking it myself. Then I watched more YT videos and learned how to dry-age steaks. Definitely way cheaper than going to a fancy steakhouse. Now I only go if someone else is paying.

  10. NinjaRabbit888

It’s almost as if people go to steakhouses for the ambiance and the night out, not just the actual food

  11. Celeres517

    No it wouldn’t, lol.

Also, please show yourself out of here and go post this on r/nosear.

  12. _echthros_

If I had to make this in Vancouver Canada it would cost $40 for ingredients from regular tier supermarket

  13. That looks like a slimy turd w pink middle tbh. No sear? is it a sirloin? Never bought sirloin

  14. FullRedact

That’s cheaper than a medium sized combo meal at Jack in the Box.

Reddit/social media cooking is gonna kill off over priced steakhouses and restaurants. Long time coming.

  15. International_Bag921

That steak is not restaurant quality.

  16. OrangeCrack

I mean this looks fine for a home cook, but I would send this back at a $100 steakhouse and ask to see the manager. I have been to a few fancy steakhouses that were well reviewed and at least in my experience it was worth the price.

  17. Delicious_Oil9902

I’ve had plenty of people tell me “I make x better at home than at a restaurant” steak being #1, then I take them to a legit steak place like Luger or Bavette’s and they apologize. I get the whole being proud you made food at home that you can order at a restaurant but, besides labor costs, they very much have the odds stacked in their favor

  18. Charming_Horse_159

Here in Uruguay this will cost 25 dollars in a fancy place. (we say that it’s expensive)

  19. TimmyStark_IronGuy

Yea but then you don’t get to belittle the staff and eat their spit

  20. RYouNotEntertained

No shade to OP, but this is the kind of post that makes me question where exactly the guys who say “I can make a steak at home that’s just a good as a steakhouse!” are eating.

I’m sure this was tasty, but the cut of beef wouldn’t be seen within a mile of an actual steakhouse.

  21. I’m not buying this story people are trying to push about a mid cut of beef and a potato costing $100 at a restaurant unless you’re exclusively eating at like $$$$ steak houses.

  22. longhornrob

LOL. Show me the restaurant that charges $100 for a boiled grey sirloin, bag salad w/ranch and a potato.

  23. This is $45 max. Any logans, longhorn or outback can serve this meal for that price or less.

  24. Ivoted4K

A steakhouse would actually dress the salad and not just pour some over the top. Lmao. This a good meal but far from restaurant quality

  25. themoertel

I think there is one place in the city I live in that would approach $100 for this.

  26. Codilious44

A steakhouse would charge $20-$30 for this. Looks good though.

  27. greatwhitenorth2022

Typically a restaurant aims for a food cost of about 25%. Basically, 4 times whatever the ingredients cost them.

  28. What steakhouse charges $100 for that? Looks like salad from a bag and a sirloin.

  29. Nebula_Nachos

    Only 100+ if you’re getting drink(s)

  30. llslothll

OP, I too love a good salad with my steak 🤝

  31. 1nternetTr011

this looks fine not critical of the meal but that’s not $100 at a steakhouse. for $100 you’re getting a 16oz prime ribeye and a fancier salad and side.

this is more like outback steakhouse for $30

  32. ActiveBlaze

Who’s paying $100 for that?! Outback steak house would probably cost $25 love getting the baked potatoes with the works 🥰

  33. Fit-Entertainment830

It looks like a fine meal, but there is nowhere that is $100. $30 at Outback or Longhorn

  34. jesonnier1

If someone gave me that plate and asked for a hundred dollars, they’re gonna have a bad time.

  35. Normal-Error-6343

i’ll give you $30 if you invite me over

  36. crispy_colonel420

Once you learn how to cook, you start to realize how much of a rip most restaurants are. Only the super high end ones with rare ingredients and complicated cooking methods can really justify their price.
