Not sure why I never thought to put my camp stove right on the coals. I have been putting it in the grate by itself this whole time.

If it’s not too late I would recommend indirect like over the top chili. The coals are going to get the pot pretty hot and most likely burn the food on then bottom which won’t taste very good.
