Opened my Anova app to cook a ribeye. Definitely isn’t worth paying a dollar for each time I use it (about twice a month). This seems like a very poor marketing decision for them. I did (just) see there were discussions about this about two months ago. “Legacy access may change”. 🙄

Yeah I’ve never used the WiFi/bluetooth on my anova so don’t care, but this is bullshit, and I’m not replacing it with anything they make
I almost bought an Anova, and after I heard this I was glad I didn’t.
Nickel and diming their customers is a great way to kill their sales. Good job.
I’m in the boat of having a ‘legacy’ device that they say will not be able to connect next year.
F off. Any replacement will absolutely not be Anova.
my v1 is going to die soon. it’s already 9.5° off. Thankfully, my new inkbird arrived today from Amazon for less than $70 with something like 30% off.
Anova can choke on a bag of perfectly cooked dicks.
I’ve used the app like 3 times, all at the very beginning. I haven’t used it in years. Literally don’t care. I can spin the wheel and hit start, and then I know for sure it’s running
Done with anova. As devices die, will replace with basically anything else.
Can you believe a team of highly paid executives thought this was a good idea? This is the end for their brand.
Who asked for all this premium content they’re claiming we all need to pay for?
I’d tell them to shove it up their ass.
I’m on the fence for what to buy. Definitely won’t be buying another Anova now. Thanks for posting
That’s a hard no for me dawg
You will own nothing and be happy.
Yep, if this is their business model fuck them, I’m never buying anything from them.
Omg so you were forced to use the buttons like a caveman
I was a happy Anova customer for years but never again after this fuck up
It’s a fucking aquarium heater with a 50¢ thermostat. I don’t subscribe to my fish tank and I’m not subscribing to this.
They can screw right off. When my Anova dies, I’ll choose another brand.
Ha ok I’ll just google recipes for
Free idiots
Wow… ok well definitely won’t be going with them for my next one…
Ok, can someone explain to me what exactly you get/don’t get with the subscription? I completely understand why people are upset but as a software engineer if they actually are providing a “service” then I can understand wanting to recoup/profit from that.
I guess my question is if I buy a Anova circulator brand new today (i.e. not being grandfathered in) does it function at all without a subscription? Can I still connect to Bluetooth? Will it still alert me when I get cook notifications if I’m in Bluetooth range?
Just to be clear, it’s more that I understand the reasoning from a technical side. The ability to connect your circulator to Wi-Fi, connect to Anova’s processing infrastructure and then have those serves send you notification or the ability to let your app connect to their infrastructure and then send settings adjustment info to your circulator does come at a cost.
I’m honestly fine paying a subscription if there is external infrastructure involved. “remote” (i.e. not in the same physical location) infrastructure costs Anova money and if I get a benefit from it I’m fine paying.
In this case no functionality has been lost to existing customers (they still get free service) and in theory (although doubtfully no matter how Anova tries) new customers should be informed of the cost for some features.
The only thing I would have liked to have seen was if existing customers were explicitly granted free lifetime use of the existing features even if they replace their device.
As long as there is a 100% free-offline option I’m actually ok with this approach if I understand it correctly. Since I don’t own an Anova I don’t know if my understanding is correct.
“quality content” everytime I open a recipe from Google I’m redirected to the base page on the app.
When I bought mine the app control was an included feature. If they take away this feature that I already paid for when I bought the product, they are taking something I paid for. That’s acting in bad faith.
I use an Instant Pot which has a Sous Vide button programmed into it. Set the temperature and time. Slow cooker, pressure cooker, dehydrator too among its repertoir
*Glares menacingly at my Inkbird*
Marketing suicide.
Serious question: What does the app really do? Isn’t the point of sous vide that it’s very easy and very forgiving. You set a temp and let the meat cook for as long as you want. I don’t understand what value added a recipe can offer.
Am I missing something? Anova is seeminy pretending they’re brilliant viral marketers. I’ve other heard of them from non-affiliated YouTube channels though. What exactly is this “innovative content” they’re talking about?
Yeah. That’s pretty sucky. I dont think that we’ve ever utilized the app, but still…
Behold! Enshitification in action.
