If it works for you, it works for you. 1500 is already almost the floor for calories needed to a survive and for some, drinking calories doesn’t provide a satisfied/full tummy for hours. It’s more or less making swaps for a Starbucks drink that is 400> calories. For 400 cals, you could eat a whole plate of food.

I toss these in a blender with banana, a scoop a peanut butter and some ice sometimes frozen strawberries

I use those Core Power 42g shakes with iced coffee and love them so much. Makes it super simple to get protein after a workout and the macros fit my needs.

It’s not for me.
No matter how much protein is in a drink or smoothie, it doesn’t keep me for long. I’m ravenous within the hour.
But if it works for others, it’s perfectly fine. The goal is to find what works best for you.

To me, “don’t drink your calories” means “don’t spend all of your calories on fruit juice or soda and then end up limiting nutrition to compensate”. These are an entirely different beast, and I love them. Great breakfast with a bit of fruit or a handful of high-fiber cereal.

The 42g premade ones were my gateway into just making my own with bulk whey protein powder and a shaker bottle. You can get a 10 lb bag of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey protein for about $130, about $0.81 per oz (1 serving), and 2 scoops/servings of it has a total of 48g of protein and 240 calories, so that’s like getting Fairlife Core Power 42g shakes for $1.62 each. There’s probably even cheaper protein powder available somewhere, maybe Costco or something.

That saying is referring to empty caloriedrinks like alcohol, soda, sugary heavy coffee drinks at Starbucks. Drinks high in calorie without nutritional value. A protein shake is literally made to provide you with a macronutrient and maybe some vitamins too.

I like my coffee in the morning sweet and I view it as a meal, it satiates me like one. It’s 185 kcal for 330 ml, it definitely fits into the rest of my day and as I said that’s my breakfast as I’m not hungry in the morning.
Other than that I drink Pepsi Max on the weekend. I definitely have a sweet tooth and this helps me with it. A can of regular soda isn’t too high in calories either, but I like to drink a lot of it.
When you’re in a deficit you probably should use your calories for food though if you’re struggling with hunger. Just think about that once you’re maintaining, your mind is probably used to like 1500 kcal of food so you can drink the rest without changing how you like to eat.

The only drink calories I do is my protein shake, which is 160 cal for 30g protein.

Personally I would switch the elite protein 42g to the fair life protein shakes 150cals 30g protein for better macros etc, that the power elite (in my opinion taste even better)

Heyo. On my 1500 cal days (I rotate) one of these for lunch and a big dinner is what I do. Keeps my muscles happy, its actually pretty filling, 6’3 195 with abs, it works. I eat more on other days. Probably 1500 cal 3x/week, 2500-3000 other days. Maintaining.

Get a creami and make ice cream with it.

I love these! Mix with diet rootbeer. Or make a smoothie with any fruit you like and a tablespoon of sugar free cheesecake pudding mix powder and this, yummy!

Daily protein coffee for breakfast is a lifesaver for me. I’m not hungry again until early afternoon. So do what works for you.

i like protein shakes especially the sweet ones but it also satisfies my sweet tooth craving or i add it into some stuff for extra protein. usually i stick to diet drinks but when i crave a drink i try to fit it in.

I think it’s a good general tip, but people strictly following 1500 a day (or any calorie limit a day) typically think through where they want to allot their calories. As long as you are taking everything you eat/drunk into account, and overall eating healthy so you aren’t starving throughout the day, it’s fine to allot some calories to a drink if you want.

“Don’t drink your calories,” means don’t waste your daily calorie budget on dense drinks like soda, fruit juice, alcohol, sugary coffee, smoothies, etc. Virtually all the macros in these drinks break down into carbs (sugar) and some fats (dairy).
The saying has nothing to do with protein drinks.

I like these. They keep me pretty full honestly

I drink these, but I only drink half with my espresso each morning. Not as many calories, still high protein (21g), and saves money!
ReboobyQ
I prefer it because I have a terrible relationship with food.

These are the best of the protein drinks. I will have one maybe two a day, but also do veggies, fruit, fish and chicken.

I love a good vanilla flavored protein drink… but I’m not currently lifting so I don’t really place a huge emphasis on giant quantities of protein like I used to.
That being said, sometimes you just gotta. This time of year I’ll definitely set aside 70 calories for a hot chocolate. I always make room for a bit of creamer in my coffee. Somedays I squeeze in a low cal drink from a cafe. It’s about what works for you! 🙂

If it fills me up and keeps me full, I don’t mind

These are amazing and help me hit my protein macros.
I hired a dietician who’s forcing me to hit 150g protein on 1500 calories a day and it’s been so good.
Lost 4 lbs of fat and gained 4 lbs of muscle in 3 weeks (this won’t be possible to continue but it’s good for now). I feel amazing

I personally find it hard to meet my protein goal (100g) unless I have a protein shake. They’re not very filling for me somehow, I know they SHOULD be with all the protein….but it’s a nice snack to treat myself to after a workout, with the added bonus of helping reach my nutrition goals. I try to avoid drinking calories that DON’T help me reach nutrition goals – non-diet pop, super sugary coffee, etc.

I love it! I tried getting in to oatmeal bc of the low calorie/high fibre health benefits blah blah blah but couldn’t get past the texture, then realised I can just take everything I make it with (oats, banana, chia seed, sugar free maple syrup & almond milk) and blend it all up into a genuinely delicious smoothie that’s like 300-400 calories and keeps me full til like 4pm, highly recommend if you can be arsed/have a blender
