Let’s get the elephant in the room properly addressed. That Reaper Hot? It’s pain and no flavor. I could probably down a bottle of Tabasco without batting an eye. I’ve eaten raw habaneros plenty of times. To put my tolerance in perspective, I love Bunster’s STB, but that’s about my limit.

Reaper Hot? Nope, no way. That won’t deter some of you. If that’s the case, I would very strongly recommend having some milk nearby, and start with a nibble or two before you go to town. This isn’t the kind of heat that sneaks up on you – it’s almost like an extract. Almost immediately, I had hot hiccups. And my only saving grace was that I only tried a tiny bit at first.

Their Extra Hot is absolutely delicious though… I’ll eat that any day of the week! It’s got a lot of flavor and has a decent kick. It’s like if Nashville Hot were made with Ghost Peppers and lots of butter, honestly. (A little on the milder side of most ghost sauces, but still nowhere near as weak as a hab sauce.)

Lastly, and I know none of you really care about this. Their sides were pretty damn good. Their slaw and mac & cheese were top-notch for a fast food place.

  2. Their standard hot is pretty tasty, but I’d guess most people who frequent this subreddit have a higher spice tolerance than I do and would consider it not spicy at all. I’ll have to give the next step up a try next time.

I’ve been building my tolerance slowly over the years. At this point it’s more of a stomach issue than a mouth issue but thats beside the point. But that reaper chicken put me in my place. Started sweating within a minute and it had my ears ringing and heart racing at one point. Way too hot for me. I started pounding cups of yogurt to soothe the burn. The next day was, not enjoyable.

Disagree with the reaper being all pain, no flavor. The rub they use has a lot of brown sugar and other spices. I think it’s great!

  5. One is opening near me and I’m very excited to try DHC.
