Ive been lucky enough, through work and a few generous friends, to try some of the ‘great’ wines of the world. I’m talking $250-750/bottle; none of the crazy 1k+ stuff that you have to spend a whole life tasting wine to really appreciate vs something half the price.
Picked this up from an auction house in Cape Town for $90, 10yrs old. Nothing I have drank ever compared. Obviously it’s white and many serious wine drinkers for some reason constrain themselves to red. This was more restrained yet tense than any red wine I’ve tasted. Can’t imagine drinking it with food, so near-overwhelming is the cascade of flavours.

Exceptional wines. They’ve been some of my most memorable as well.
I attended a tasting for this wine last spring, hosted by Eben Sadie himself! My favorite was the ‘09. He takes about how the Provence was an inspiration for the wine, which was very apparent when tasting the ‘04, which AFAIK was the first vintage.
Sadie Family Chenin Blancs are outstanding. I’ve got a few 2019 Skurfbergs that I’m holding on to.
Damn, I’ve got to start buying some Sadie! Awesome notes!
It’s great to hear you enjoyed it. It’s kind of funny that I have the exact opposite experience with Palladius. I have had it twice now, and each time I came away disappointed.
And there is nothing wrong with enjoying whites more than reds. I know I do.
It may not be underrated but for me there’s no better high quality white wine for great prices than Chenin and SA leads the way.
Sadie’s wines are like unilaterally unbelievable
White wine is more interesting than red, if you force me to choose! For me it’s a question of elegance over power.
Glad to hear this was a jaw dropper!
Absolutely amazing wine!!
