Updating from an earlier post, with my first review here on r/wine!

I’ve slowly gotten into the wine world over the last few years, and working in the fine dining industry, I’m lucky to be exposed to a lot of higher level bottles and people who are amazing and willing to share. My first epiphany moment with wine, the sip that turned on the light bulb, was a 2010 Roulot white burgundy. I was so intrigued and so thrown off by the amount of flavors and textures and feelings that the wine thrust upon me, I didn’t know how to react. Following this experience, I was sent into a two year foray into white burgundy and have found myself with significantly lighter pockets since. As an avid drinker of Nebbiolo and lover of Italy, I had sworn France to be overrated and dull. Boy, did this day prove me wrong!

Ive been chasing that dragon since, and landed on Meursault and Pouilly-Fuisse, or more southern burg whites as my palettes choice due to the richness, creaminess, and more oak, as opposed to higher acid and steely-clean, crisp Chablis counterparts.

Today, we have a bottle that intrigued me when I saw it, excited me when I got home and did some research, and blew my mind when I opened it.

2009 Drouhin “Arthur” Oregon Chardonnay, found this among 4-5 more, covered in dust in a south Florida liquor store. Here’s my novice review so we can all get this over with…

Med-deep gold color, almost amber, gold flake and perfectly hued. Intense nose, flooded with deep, rich, and creamy apple orchard notes, little bit of flint, lot of brown butter and seriously (SERIOUSLY) heavy popcorn, but it was so good, no chemical traces, just organic pure old butter. Insanity. Wine was dry, weighty, but so well integrated, little bit of tannin (from oak maybe?) but it was so dang smooth. Medium acid, high alcohol, full body, intense flavor, crazy long finish. This wine is outstanding and was preserved so well!
I’m going to buy the rest tomorrow. Overall 9/10 and blew my expectations out of the water. So balanced, so tertiary. Rich and smooth oak, toasted sourdough, kombucha and apples, buuuttterr, brown butter, more butter…. Lots of vanilla and little nutmeg, soft cheese… marmalade… man it just keeps going. Thanks for reading and if you see one of these, I can’t recommend it enough. The age has done this wine such a service and I’d say this is its prime.
