My previous review was of El Rincón de Juan Carlos, which was our favorite restaurant in Tenerife. SAN HÔ is located at the same Hotel as El Rincón de Juan Carlos (the Royal Hideaway Corales Beach Resort), and we went 3 days after El Rincón. If you want my final thoughts you can skip to the last 2 paragraphs.
Maybe El Rincón de Juan Carlos and SAN HÔ shouldn’t be compared, one is a 2* that opened in 2003 and offer tasting menu for 170€ and the other is 1* that opened 2021 and offer a tasting menu starting at 125€. Still, due to our recent visit, I found myself comparing SAN HÔ with El Rincón de Juan Carlos.
While El Rincón de Juan Carlos is situated at the 5th floor and offers amazing views from their dining room, SAN HÔ is located at the ground floor of the hotel, next to a lawn. We decided to seat outside, next to the lawn, we were comfortable and enjoyed the view here.
At the time of our visit SAN HÔ offered 2 tasting menus, one for 125€ and the other for 145€. As we don’t know if we’ll be visiting Tenerife again we went for the longer menu (I believe it had a couple more courses). They don’t have a set wine pairing, instead you can choose a wine pairing which consisted of 7 glasses (if i remember well) chosen at the time by their Maître/Sommelier Daniel Rozada. My fiancé went for the pairing and as I had to drive 1+ hour back tour our airbnb I settled for having small sips of her paring and adding a couple of glasses of my favorite wines.
The menus started with some small bites (sashimi, wagyu and ceviche), to be honest It was a bad start and I felt disappointed, those were pretty bland and uninteresting. These were followed by some beautifully presented appetizers, these were a step up from the first bites but I can’t even remember the taste. Around these the wine pairing began and my fiancé was offered a great local wine which really helped with the not so great first courses.
The next dish (1st photo) was “Buenavista prawn, tear peas and ginger beurre blanc” which was amazing, maybe the best prawns I’ve ever had. They were served raw, th flavour of the prawns was slightly sweet which characteristic of these prawns from what we were told, texture was soft and the beurre blanc rounded up the dish perfectly. I think these prawns were paired with my favorite wine of the evening a 2023 Táganan which apparently a favorite of Obama when he was in office, and made impossible to get it for some years.
For the next course we had the “Patudo” tuna belly, caviar served with a side of shiitake dashi. Full of flavour as one would expect of toro, one of the best bites of the evening for sure. The next savory dishes ranged from good to great, specially the (local) goat, each step accompanied with amazing local wines and great context given by Daniel. At last two desserts were given, my favorite was the one that had canarian goat cheese ice cream (one of the extra courses of the longer menu) paired with the classic sweet wine from canarias (which helped Cristobal Colon and their crew survive the journey to America).
As you can see the experience started with some disappointing courses but everything changed after the Buenavista prawn. We had some amazing wines and the hospitality from Daniel Rozada was amazing. We could see that Daniel served different wines to different tables and its seemed like no wine tasting was exactly the same. Daniel’s hospitality and wine selection was definitely the highlight of the meal, seeing that were enjoying that much he gave us a couple of extra glasses (for free) during the meal. So even though the meal had some high and lows we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to SAN HÔ.
We had some business at the northern part of tenerife, and our stay was 2 week long, so it wasn’t an option for us but If the budget allows it staying at Royal Hideaway Corales Beach Resort seems crazy convenient as El Rincón de Juan Carlos and SAN HÔ ar located here. Still we were glad about staying at the northern part of tenerife and found Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos and Garachico charming.
