Accidentally put Zojirushi rice cooker pot in the dishwasher, is it still ok/safe to use?
I accidentally put the zojirushi pot in the dishwasher. There’s light scratches like this throughout the pan. Do you think it’s still ok and safe to use?

Wait, the pot isn’t machine washable???

Getting scratches on a rice cooker pot is pretty much unavoidable. But you’ll rapidly age the pot if you use the dishwasher.
Oh__Archie
It’s just hot water and soap. You’re fine.

I thought they were supposed to be dishwasher safe.
It’s perfectly fine to still use. If it starts flaking, I would get a new pot at that point. Teflon is inert until very high temperatures (500F), but nobody knows the long term effects of ingesting Teflon flakes. Using a dishwasher will definitely reduce the lifespan of the Teflon coating though! The rattling and harsh temperatures/detergent of the dishwasher can cause microscratches that become larger over time.

Just doing it once should be okay. Just watch those scratches and if they worsen or the non-stick coating starts to flake/lift, get a new pot.
For anyone else wondering, from Zojirushi’s website:
A: Unfortunately, rice cooker parts and accessories are not dishwasher safe.
We finally retired one of the inner pots after a 5 years or so of eventual scratch buildup even when not putting it through the dish washer.

I noticed mine has a ton of scratches when I look closely. I also noticed replacement pots are $90 in Canada. So I’m getting rid of mine and switching to a stainless steel rice cooker to avoid this nonsense.

It’s PFAS. Unless you want forever chemicals in your body, always replace the bowl when it gets scratches.
Edit: And always clean with the soft side of the sponge.

It’s safe. I’ve been eating the teflon coating on mine for years now.

If you mean the inside pot, it will be fine if it’s just the one time you did this.
If you mean the electronic cooker itself, probably not since that would most likely destroy the circuitry…

Either yes or no, I’d say anyway

Still fine, just don’t put it in the dishwasher anymore

I never use the dishwasher on mine but it’s in much rougher shape and works just fine. My pots bottom is almost completely free of the Teflon coat but the replacements are wicked expensive. There would need to be a hole in it before I buy a new insert.

Yeah, dishwashers tend to strip away the protective coating over the Teflon. Once is fine, but it will slowly increase the potential for bad rice, and you know, the poison that is Teflon.
Hand washing is worth it for any cooking pans/pots/etc, if you want them to last more than a year.

Damn ok glad I saw this. I’ve been putting mine in the dishwasher for the past few weeks

Wait…. I’ve been washing my pot for about 2 years and it’s still the same as when I purchased it? (To be fair I did purchase one of the higher end models ~$350) Have I been handling my rice cooker improperly this whole time?!

Yes it’s still safe to use. But if you keep putting it in dish washer, the pot will deteriorate faster than it should. I’ve been putting mine in dishwashers for years before I found out.. still fine tho

I’ve been worried about the whole non-stick coating degradation issue with my NL-GAC18 (with the B597-6B pot), because I can’t buy a new one (“Out of Stock on the Zojirushi site). I searched, and found this post from a while back:
I’m not sure about the science, because I’m not a chemist, but I’ve been using it now for a while with minor scratches and even some flaking. I’d love to replace it with like a stainless steel pot or something, but apparently that’s not an option.

Is there some hazard to putting the metal pot in the dishwasher?
I’m asking because I’ve done it for a while now. 😬
