Thanks to a fellow redditor, discovered this gem yesterday and got the freshest chicken possible (still warm when I got home). You can also get duck, pigeon, rabbit and possibly other animals too. There are 2/3 varieties of chicken (red or white, hen or rooster). Prices are very reasonable (I paid 16 USD incl taxes for approx 5+ lbs live red hen, Without skin and in small pieces it weighed about 3.5 lbs at home so expect to pay between 4 to 5$ per pound for dressed, cleaned chicken). Next I have to figure out difference between the white and red chicken varieties and compare rooster based curry / soup vs hen – rooster has stringier meat, stronger flavor. The hen was absolutely delicious when cooked.

Thanks for posting this. I want to buy chicken feet for bone broth and had no idea where to go. Will check this place out.

If you go here, you need to watch the whole process to really appreciate your chicken.. I usually give them a name after I pick them out and before the processing

Omg I used to live across from the alley behind them on Marshfield. Early morning deliveries of chickens is really loud.

However the one time a rooster got loose and the guy in a long black rubber apron chasing it with a cleaver was beyond hysterical to watch.

As a first gen Chicagoan born to Mexican immigrants. This place is home to some of my oldest memories. And for the longest I thought this was the only way to get the chicken needed for caldo de pollo. I haven’t been in years but I could smell this place.

Lol I used to work in that area. For Halloween they would let kids let a bunny… lol.
It was a place that I always appreciated- like, that’s your chicken , right there.
They must own their building lol.
Having a heakth inspector describe their process was… something. From what I understand, they basically slaughter a chicken in front of the inspector so she can see if they’re compliant.
    Kinda appreciate these places exist.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but commercially produced chicken has terrible texture and flavor these days. I start chewing and it just kinda goes mushy.

I’d like to get some real chicken so I will give them a try.

Love eating a still warm chicken carcass!

I always assumed they just sold the chickens live and you had to slaughter, defeather, butcher, etc yourself. I didn’t realize they’d handle all that work for you. I might need to stop by sometime now.

I work across the street and it’s always fun when a chicken manages to escape and makes a break for it down Chicago Ave.
