It just sucks having to experience stuff like this, had this since 2010 as my honing steel and it just breaks when someone borrowed without permission. Pretty non apologetic about it too which kinda makes me furious. He said he dropped it.

Since you are now in for a replacement, I highly recommend the shun tungsten carbide honing rod. I have had mine for about 15 years and it is pretty much indestructible, unless you are honing a tungsten blade on it, it should last till the end of your life, just unscrew before cleaning, dry completely before reassembly to prevent rusting.
On the upside, now you have an excuse to get a new one.
