Vino Pipeño, Chile

I am currently in Chile so after hearing about it, I had to try Pipeño.

This is a young white wine from a field blend of indeterminate wine grapes. I think they make it red also and some winemakers seem to treat it a bit more carefully, so I’m going to try to track some bottles down.

As you can see, this came in a 5L plastic jug.

The label says 12% and that tastes about right. It’s also as sweet as a soda, basically. Normally it is consumed in the winter and spring a few months after harvest. Was a bit hard to find this time of year.

Nose: honey, orange blossom, chloraphyl, brett

    Taste: apricot, peaches, honey,

    High acidity, sweet or semi-sweet.

It’s reminiscent of a younger sauternes or some of the Italian vin jaune or apasamiento styles. Despite the sweetness, it’s highly drinkable.

I’ve deemed it the perfect pairing for Chilean food. High fat, oniony empanadas, pork ribs, mayonnaise-heavy sandwiches, charcuterie. This goes with it all perfectly.

I ordered it at a restaurant once and was served a larger than pint glass of it. I was eating pork ribs and it was the perfect pairing.

Thanks to u/hatersbelearners for the tip to try Pipeño.
